Niagara Icedogs 2024-25 Season Thread, Part IV

so the way I understand it:

Players get into some shenanigans. League gets a complaint. League tells them that a punishment has to happen. Ice Dogs say they will handle it internally. League believes them. So while yes, the league did mandate punishment as reported, they did not mandate THIS SPECIFIC punishment. Don't know why the league let them decide what the punishment was going to be. Leave it to Ice Dogs brass to make it a spectacle.

I don’t think you quite understand it. This was league mandated amongst other requirements.

That's close. However, the league (Bryan Crawford) did a thorough investigate of theatre-gate and your correct in that IceDogs were involved, in part, on the decision on how to serve their punishment. Our IceDogs' logo has another black eye.

So they were sitting players in game 1 as well?

Are there any more players that need to sit or is that all of them now.

So, it was 5 players, first period only, in game one and the remainder of the suspension, 5 players in the subsequent periods of game two. All on-ice suspensions are completed, now their off-ice suspensions take into immediate effects. The consequences for not following the off-ice suspension is severe.

The league didn't mandate the specific punishment.

Not quite. First of all no OHL member was with the team at the theatre or witnessed the incident. The players initially denied the occurrence despite members of the public already coming forth to the OHL. Secondly the team instituted the benching but planned to have it occur over the 4 game series. Note in game one players only sat during the first period. The OHL said not good enough and 5 players sat each period in game two. Finally the OHL put some teeth in the discipline to the players if there are any additional shortcomings.

For additional clarity to theatre-gate, the IceDog players seized the precise day their babysitter (Brodie Barrack) left town (OHL Cup) to attend the movie unsupervised and proceeded to embarrass the team and league. The complaint regarding the IceDogs’ players was filed by Landmark theatre and those in attendance. The attempt to cover up the incident initially was the decision of the team’s leadership group. Poor judgement!

hhhhhmmmmm, how is that legal. Some of these players are adults with free will and Rights.

Anyway, was management or ownership disciplined?
Sure, they can do whatever they want. No one is stopping them. However, the league can and will enforce the punishment set out for their deliberate defiance of the league's code of conduct policy. If a player(s) are willing to accept the punishment stated by the OHL, they can go to another movie tonight if they want.
