NHL's Most Notorious Cheap Shot Artists

...
Never quite understood the Reaves argument. He's thrown 3 bad hits that have led to supplementary discipline. Guess how many total hits he's thrown? Over 3000. It's actually impressive that he's been able to stay clean compared to many of the other big hitters around the league for as long as he has. He doesn't belong in the same sentence as Hartman or Wilson.

...to be honest, Wilson (who is DEFINITELY NO ANGEL) doesn't belong in the same sentence as Hartman either...guys like Hartman, Cooke, Kenny "The Rat" Linseman (who is actually a really nice guy - talked with him after a Montreal - Boston Oldtimers game for almost an hour), Claude Lemieux, Ulf, Avery and such were guys that went out there to hurt you, "hockey play" or not...they didn't just get caught up in throwing massive hits, legal or not, they went out there to take you off the ice by any means necessary; it didn't matter to them what they had to do to "get the job done"...

Vaclav Varada
Darcy Tucker
Patrick Kaleta
Ruslan Salei
Andrei Nazarov
Steve Downie
Tom Wilson

Just a couple names I didn't see yet.

I'd say Scott Stevens was worse........

.........he wanted to end your career.

He'd go out of his way to hurt you.

Pure trash.

But he did it within the rules of the game. That doesn't align with being "dirty player" or a "cheap shot" artist.

Scott Stevens was a master at what he did. (Today he wouldn't last two games with a suspension)

Shocked there's no mention of "captain" Mark Messier

This guy could feed an entire homeless population if he served them his elbows

It’s crazy to me that Messier’s reputation for dirty play has managed to stay so small. The dude was absolutely ruthless (and according to many, he sucks as a person as well).

For sure. I do feel like star players sometimes get a little let off the hook with this. Scott Stevens is another I don't see much mention of, but he could intentionally target heads like a champ, even when players were tied up and had no way to avoid his "clean" hits

Scott Stevens is good too. right?

Carter Verhaeghe is 15th in shots the last 3 seasons on a $4.167m cap hit.

Downie, Shaw, and Carcillo were all kind of the same brand of contemptible gutter trash. They're just in the general scumbag bin for me rather than notorious.
...

Bingo! Downie and Carcillo were the names in my head when clicking on the thread. I remember both guys as just walking suspensions.

I did a quick peruse on wikipedia to remind myself how bad these guys were, and found Downie could actually play some hockey. Had a 20 goal season, and meshed with high talent players. He could have had a way better career if he could have backed off from the crazy train a bit.

But Dan Carcillo is my vote for the all-time worst cheap shot artist. He was suspended or fined 12 times in 9 NHL seasons. Just one example being a cross-check from behind into the boards long after the whistle. I understand he had rough off-ice experiences and brain injuries that would affect behavior, so I'm not slagging him as a human. But his on ice actions were the worst I can remember, while contributing nothing to the game.

Stevens is the worst because he calls other guys predators for legal hits now and never comments on the shit he did.
