NHL can't laterally change the rules to reduce head injuries themselves. Union has to agree to those rule changes themselves thus it becomes a CBA issue.

Maybe this would get players to knock it off with the dumb stupid hits that cause head injuries.

@gstommylee yes, they cannot unilaterally make rule changes, but they can propose them to the competition committee which makes recommendations and the GMs vote on it.

Not a direct CBA discussion item. But could be involved in CBA discussions, especially if the union wants $$ for long term care and/or research.

i don't see NHL/PA banning fighting/body checking. Players want to be able to police themselves and the league wants the sport to be exciting for the fans.

That's not going to happen.. Player union /nhl won't ban fighting/body checking.. Just like NFL won't ban tackling.

You turn NHL into no contact hockey and any popularity it has goes down the drain and people will just stop watching. Fan won't pay that kind of money to see no contact at all.

My understanding was that the committee for the NHLPA was being put in place to help create more ways to help players with CTE/CTE-like symptoms. Trying to form it now, while the NHL and NHLPA are already in very preliminary CBA talks, is a fruitless endeavor because it will take years for them to come up with any level of conclusion that you could bring to the negotiating table. So they would have to wait another 6+ years (speculating on length of "new" CBA) for them to even consider some kind of actionable agenda item for a CBA.

Double edge sword for players. PA will always defend the aggressor and limit games suspended, thus money given up. So, if they ban fighting, the league isn't really going to "handle" it, as wel have seen over the decades.

The NHLPA is the biggest reason concussions continue to be a massive problem. Not the owners, or Bettman, the refs, or the DOPS. The players.
