I love how a few Panther fans are starting to complain about a brutal travel schedule. Try playing in the west.

They actually have a complaint. Just so they could keep those Atlantic teams together. That is the only part that is truly dumb in this. The 14-16 split isn't great but it does make sense from a time zone standpoint. But flying teams over others just so those teams can keep their precious compact conference doesn't.

The midwest division is crap right now. The Blackhawks and maybe St. Louis should have a free ride. It will make some of the other crappy teams look better.

So wait, the West now gets 8 playoff slots split between 14 teams instead of 15? I don't mind, but it seems easily avoidable.

So we have a 30 team league and the NHL decides to split the two conferences 14/16.....

Sounds par for the course.

Whether or not they did it for this reason I don't now, but I like it from the standpoint of it theoretically making it harder for teams in the East to make the playoffs (more teams to beat out), which kind of offsets the MUCH easier travel they have.

You know what, I hadn't considered that before. If the reason that they split things up 16/14 (more difficult for easier travel) is to try and balance things out then I agree, at least its something. Great point.

Didn't Jim Fox, or was it Daryl Evans, on TV the other night mention it this way ? balanced for travel and eventually with expansion we'd have 32 teams so 16/16 somewhere down the line. Made sense when he talked about it. :)

Chicago has it so easy with these changes. Now if Quebec gets a team, they may have to move a team back to the Central (which I'm hoping would be Detroit). I'm used to seeing the Wings being rivals against the Blues and Hawks.

Could be, I am on the road and watch via the intrawebs so depending on who's tv guys I get I turn the volume down and watch the game as it was meant to be seen, in perfect silence....

Aka, I probably just missed it. As for expansion I would love to see that happen but I can't see it from where we are today. We have Pho still potentially moving as well as a couple of other teams who could be moving down the road.

I would love to see Seattle and or Portland get an NHL team as well as the Nordique being allowed to come out of exile.

Vivre Le Nordique!

It's hard to divide 30 teams in 4 divisions of equal size.

I propose 10 divisions. Each team would have extra games against the two teams in its division and the six teams in the divisions immediately above and below it:

VAN/CAL/EDM Vancouver Will Win The Presidents' Trophy Every Year Division
LAK/ANA/SJS Pacific Division
PHX/COL/DAL Roanoke Division
STL/CHI/MIN Flyover Division
DET/CLB/NSH Teams Detroit Didn't Know it Had a Rivalry With Division
CAR/TBL/FLA Southleast Division
PIT/PHI/WAS Pond Hockey Division
NYI/NYR/NJD Metropolis Division
BOS/MTL/WIN Drama Division
TML/OTT/BUF All Maple Leaf Fan Division

The one good thing this gets rid of is the team that wins the ********* division and getting home ice despite having less points than the 6 seed they're facing. Looking at you, South East.

Should be the California or Golden State Division ;)
