NHL wants to expand to 36 teams

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I'd love it, but we don't support hockey here much with shifting demographics. Though certainly based on just geography and population Brampton /Mississauga make sense as a location for Toronto #2. That includes highway access as well. Brampton really lacks a central social hub and any arena project would require a massive swatch of land to be developed from scratch. But there are some key spots where that land exists still.

Toronto 2 Electric Boogaloo has a nice ring to it. Too bad the London Knights probably somehow have rights to that also.

Talent pool is already too watered down, this feels like a cash grab with zero consideration about the quality of play. Gonna start looking like the 80's again where teams like the Oilers would beat the Mickey Mouse Devils 13-3. Then parity would eventually take over and tons of 3rd liners would be AHL quality instead of how it is with most 4th lines now

Yes! Can't wait until teams play each other twice, maybe 3 times where the games suck, animosity is non-existent and people just look like they're there to cash a nice pay cheque.

Well, I guess it works for Basketball.
And that's where Gary Bettman came from: The NbA. The $$$ formula worked to make tons of it so why not ruin the NHLoL?!

0 reason why Toronto should not have a 2nd team.

Eh, have you seen their 1st team? Oy vey.

Seriously though, could grow to become a cool thing.
36 teams.. many, many fans will never see their team win a title in their lifetime.

No stopping it though. 50 teams by 2060

Hah, jokes on you, I had no hopes of that happening anyways!

Whoa, this dude is actually using critical thinking/media literacy, watch out! Seriously though, that shit makes the world complex-

“It’s being reported that..” could literally mean “I’m reporting some shit I just made up.” Throw some fonts and backgrounds on it, though, and people don’t even notice. Seriously, without any hint of a source this could be completely made up.
Hockey is a beautiful sport that Americans love when they get the chance to be exposed to it. Expansion is the way the NHL can foster an even greater spirit of hockey in impressionable sports-loving yout$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Haha that’s well done.

People say there isn’t enough skill, I say nonsense. The game has grown so much since the ‘90s, Gretz and Mario faced off against pylons at points, I don’t think that’s an issue. I just kinda question the legitimacy of this tweet- 1) source? 2) desire and definite plans are very different matters.

36 teams would work if every team went the traditional top 6 bottom 6 route, where the bottom 6 isn't expected to do much up front.

But we all know that's not how it's gonna be. Some teams are deeper than others and we're just gonna have more shitty teams (like, some really awful ones, think last years San Jose).

I don't think I watched a single SJS game last year and I don't want more of that.

On top of that, the NHL wants everyone to play everyone so all this is going to do is take away from games inside the conference. Which is completely opposite to what they want with the playoff format.

Yeah I know, this is all about money. Point is at some point enough has to be enough and they have to put quality of the product first.

The first three have been telegraphed quite clearly. It'll be Atlanta, Houston, and Phoenix.

I don't think folks are talking about San Diego though. Similar population to the Tampa/St.Pete metro and another sunbelt city. The new arena that they build there is going to be tempting.

Vancouver
Calgary
Edmonton
Seattle
San Jose
Los Angeles
Anaheim
San Diego
Vegas
Winnipeg
Minnesota
St. Louis
Chicago
Colorado
Utah
Arizona
Dallas
Houston
Montreal
Toronto
Ottawa
Boston
Detroit
Buffalo
New York Rangers
New York Islanders
New Jersey
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Columbus
Washington
Carolina
Nashville
Atlanta
Tampa
Florida

Elliott reported that the NHL is trying to increase the new franchise fee to $2B per team (or as close to that as they can), so it's not surprising that the owners would want 4 more teams. That's almost 100 additional players in the league. Definitely a dilution issue in the short term.

San Diego has had a little trouble keeping teams (Chargers, Clippers). It's too nice outside - why watch sports.

How many of the new teams will be “Hockey Club” and how many will be Rough Riders?...or would it be “Golden Hockey Club”?
