NHL TV ratings 2022/2023

The Celtics and Bruins are in the midst of fantastic seasons, and unsurprisingly, local viewership has coincided with their success.

Through Dec. 12, Celtics broadcasts on NBC Sports Boston are up 40 percent in ratings and 56 percent in impressions — the estimated number of viewers in a given amount of time — year over year.

The biggest gains are among women. Viewership has leapt 71 percent among women 18-49 and 67 percent among women 25-54. The broadcasts are up 20 percent in ratings and 41 percent in impressions among men 25-54, and up 28/51 among adults 25-54.

Also of note: Celtics fans are loyal to Mike Gorman, Brian Scalabrine, and NBC Sports Boston’s broadcast team. In the four games this season in which the Celtics have aired simultaneously on ESPN, NBC Sports Boston’s broadcast has had a 64 percent advantage in viewership.

The story for NESN’s Bruins broadcasts is one of similar success — and similar expanded popularity with women, with impressions up 62 percent in the women 25-54 demographic. Impressions are up 43 percent overall, 32 percent among adults 18-34, and 24 percent among adults 25-54.

NESN’s Bruins broadcasts are tops among regional sports cable networks that broadcast NHL games, averaging 94,000 impressions per game, 54 percent higher than the No. 2 NHL RSN

Argentina’s Win Over France Is Fox’s Most-Watched World Cup Final Ever, Streaming Jumps 158% From 2018https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/argentina-france-world-cup-final-ratings-1235465323/amp/.

Higher then the nhl ever had
Comparing international competition to a sports league is always tough to do. The Winter Olympic final between the US and Canada in Vancouver had 26.7 million viewers in the US and well over half the country in Canada watching. As high or higher then any international soccer game. What is a more apt comparison is the NHL Stanley Cup finals gets much higher ratings in the US and Canada then any soccer league in the world including MLS in North America.

Higher then the nhl ever had
These kind of posts can really ruin the credibility of a poster lol.

I mean it’s an every 4 year international event, not surprising it’s higher than the domestic hockey championship. It’s worth nothing however that the 2010 olympic gold medal hockey game averaged 26 million viewers in the US, peaking at 34 million so this supposed soccer takeover that’s been supposed to happen since the 94 world cup in the US still hasn’t happened yet
The 2010 Olympics was at a much more decent time since it was in the pacific time zone. That game started around noon PST. This world cup was at 7 AM PST. So not really comparable due to a big timing difference and being so early in the morning for most of the country. 2014 would be more comparable due to the start time since that also started around 7 AM PST.

Higher then the nhl ever had
Higher than any NBA game post Michael Jordan.

Clearly soccer is more popular than basketball in America

I’ll put this here as it isn’t deserving as it’s own thread, but looking at the TNT schedule this week it looks like Kathryn Tappen is joining TNT’s coverage. She is listed as being a reporter/interviewer on the Flames-Kraken game on Wednesday. She also did that role on TNT’s “The Match“ a few weeks ago.

There was a report a few weeks that she was going to be out on NBC’s Golf coverage and was looking to move to either ESPN or TNT for their hockey coverage after she was passed over for the SNF sideline job. Looks like TNT could be the landing spot.

So it looks like TNT will now have everyone but Boucher and Pierre from the last year of the main NBC team.

The NHL Winter Classic — Penguins-Bruins from Fenway Park in Boston — averaged 1.78 million viewers on TNT Monday afternoon, the largest regular season NHL audience ever on cable and up 31% from the previous high set by last year’s Winter Classic (Blues-Wild: 1.4M).

This year marks just the second time since 2014 that Winter Classic viewership has increased over the previous edition. Viewership also increased for the previous Winter Classic to involve the Bruins, against the Blackhawks at Notre Dame Stadium in 2019.

Despite the multiple highs, this year’s audience tops only last year as the lowest for the Winter Classic. Keep in mind the event aired on broadcast from 2008-20. The previous times the Bruins hosted the Winter Classic, it averaged 2.78 million in 2016 (against Montreal from Gillette Stadium) and 3.68 million in 2010 (against Philadelphia from Fenway).
