On a Sunday during football season?

No it would have been way lower.

Ive been following hockey religiously since 1996 and I honestly cant remember national tv games on Sunday during football season
Outside of the outdoor game in Toronto a few years ago (when NYD was on a Sunday), I think it is probably a first.

It is obviously filler content. These are games that would otherwise be ESPN+ exclusives, so it is still probably a net gain in viewership.

My guess is the ESPN+ numbers were beyond awful last year and that combined with not having the Final meant they had to shift games from + to ESPN to satisfy advertisers and get the total audience numbers up. So the NHL got the old MLS death timeslots that opened up because of the November World Cup (and MLS leaving ESPN for Apple next year).

Again though these are extra games. It isn’t like ESPN shifted what was their Tuesday/Thursday schedule into these slots.

Plus their Tuesday 8pm games have given some excellent ratings, so I think you're spot on with your hypothesis

Though with College Basketball starting we hit the dead spot in the ESPN schedule. I think there are only about 5 games in espn between now and Jan. 5, only one on a non-NFL Sunday.

Of course TNT still has their full double headers, so it isn’t like last year where the league fell off the earth in November and December.

In 1996 there was an espn2 game opposite SNF.
In 1997 there was an ESPN game opposite SNF.
In 2001 there were 5 espn2 games opposite SNF and one that started in the late afternoon NFL window on espn2.
In 2002 there were 12 espn2 games opposite SNF.
In 2003 there were 9 espn2 games opposite SNF.
In 2008 Versus had the "NHL Premiere" (Europe games) doubleheader against NFL early games.
In 2017 there was the Centennial Classic (as mentioned above.)

So most of the previous NFL conflicts are similar to this upcoming Sunday where ESPN has Capitals-Lightning with a 7pmET start. In the early 2000s that's what it was on espn2 (for a majority of them) where late afternoon NFL was in late 4th quarter when the NHL started on espn2, then the game would overlap into SNF (which was on ESPN back then.)

The rarity is Sunday NHL games H2H with NFL afternoon windows. Like the NHL had twice previously this season and once more going forward. After that the final two "NFL Sunday" ESPN NHL games (2nd and 3rd periods of them) will go against SNF.

As for the change, Disney split their inventory more 50/50 (linear/stream) this season. What were 24 espn+/Hulu exclusives last year -which inexplicably were usually overlapping or same time as other espn+/Hulu exclusives sort of counter-programming themselves on espn+ (only one of those overlaps this season and it already happened)- are now extra ABC/ESPN (and one espn2) games. That show up all over the schedule, not necessary all swapped out for "NFL Sunday" filler, since there's only 6 Sunday games against the NFL. So 1/4th of the additional linear games are "Sunday filler", the rest come via additional Tuesday games the first few weeks of the season, added ABC games, and a ton of game nights added to the final few weeks of the season.

The C-USA conference of CFB just signed a new deal with CBS/ESPN that would put more games on mid week nights so the NHL might have to lean more on Turner until the january.

When I first saw it I thought; great, there goes the extra NHL on ESPN Tuesday games in Oct. and the one each in Nov. and Dec.

Though, as I read it, CBSSN seems more like the main partner for those games and ESPN will have "some" but espn3/espn+ was repeatedly mentioned for the leftover football games.

So possibly a little like MACtion now where ESPN, ESPNU, espn2 have games but CBSSN also has a game, but in reverse where CBSSN will get the better C-USA game(s) and ESPN/U/2/3/+ will have the leftovers. At least how I read it, should still be room for what exists now, at least that first month (Oct) of NHL on ESPN Tuesday's and then unfortunately probably just these Sunday games until January.

TNT’s four NHL games this week averaged 289,000 viewers (Penguins-Capitals: 408K; Oilers-Lightning: 374K; Wild-Ducks: 183K; Predators-Kraken: 175K), up comfortably from the network’s lone game in the comparable week of last season (Wild-Coyotes: ~234K). ESPN chipped in 213,000 for Maple Leafs-Hurricanes last Sunday.

236k for Capitals-Lightning on ESPN Sunday night.

Even H2H with NFL (Cowboys-Packers OT and SNF) that's a disappointing number, especially with the 7pmET start.

0.07 demo we still don't have the broadcast numbers but I feel that Cowboys @ Packers gets 30M so I think the numbers is decent but the demo is terrible.

All things considered the NHL games have been doing pretty solid so far this season, minus the Sunday and non-exclusive games

I was expecting roughly what it got. Can see previously in the thread I said we would all be "hoping to break 200k" for these ESPN [H2H w/NFL] Sunday games. Though, what's expected can still be disappointing. It's not a good number. It's not a disaster. It's the exact same # TNT got for their 7/7:30pmET non-exclusive game. As 4mats4 said and I agree: "solid so far this season, minus the Sunday and non-exclusive games." Those two things would fall in the category of ... lets say, disappointing? Not unexpected or surprising, but disappointing nonetheless. If you have a better description, great.

All things considered the NHL games have been doing pretty solid so far this season, minus the Sunday and non-exclusive games

This is what I got:
ESPN Tues early: 672k (4 games)
ESPN Tues late: 377k (4 games)
ESPN SUN: 212k (3 games)
ESPN overall: 439k (11 games)

TNT early: 460k (5 games)
TNT early non-exclusive: 236k (1 game)
TNT late: 334k (3 games)
TNT late non-exclusive: 227k (2 games)
TNT overall: 363k (11 games)

ESPN/TNT overall: 401k (22 games)

Exactly on the Sunday games and the non-exclusives, they are what they are. Otherwise, solid with some positives -- specifically the two ESPN Tuesday 8pmET games that got 750k and 699k, respectively. To me, those are the biggest positives, so far.

Really hoping ESPN 8pm Tuesday games become a thing going forward. Just doesn't make sense to me to leave numbers like that on the table. Could you imagine the NHL getting 600k plus consistently like that?

Wednesday’s Blackhawks-Blues NHL regular season game averaged a 0.17 rating and 264,000 viewers on TNT, followed by Kings-Oilers at 242,000 viewers — both down from the network’s lone game last year, Blackhawks-Kraken (~373K). In other action, ESPN chipped in 236,000 for Lightning-Capitals last Sunday night. The game trailed its lead-in from the United States-Germany women’s soccer friendly (337K).

ARE these numbers across the entire USA just from the two cities playing? If it’s the two cities, that’s not bad, no?

Happy to see TNT and ESPN arent afraid of showing Canadian teams on tv

Mentioned before that it would be and now it is a blow to the season-average that the NHL didn't have their 'normal' matinee Black Friday game this season. Last year 1.2M on ABC is now 488k and 332k on TNT this year. Obviously the World Cup this year. Hoping it's not "lost" since now there will be the NFL Black Friday game. Still think there would be room for the traditional 1pmET Bruins hosted Black Friday game, That traditional "event" game did and would do better than making Black Friday feel like just another normal NHL day with two random games at night which is how Friday's doubleheader felt.

The NHL has so few "event" games during the regular season (Opening Night, Black Friday, Winter Classic, Stadium Series, Heritage Classic sometimes) that not having THE Black Friday game/time slot would be a mistake. Almost wish they did have it at 1pmET this year just to see what it would have done, last hour and a half of the game would have gone against USA-England but I'm not fully convinced it would have been a horrible number. In the range of some of the lower rated ABC Saturday games last season seems realistic, to me.
