Retention boosts the return because they can then make other moves with the added cap space.

It's too bad it's a tactic that the Sabres have not embraced in quite some time. Heck, Adams bragged about not retaining on any deals a deadline or two ago.

We are 3/4 done with the NHL season.

Detroit is retaining 1.3M for 1/4 of the season, so around 325k in cash.

So, they bought a 4th round pick for 325k

Evidently, that isn't something the Sabres are able or willing to do.

I don't see the fit here unless he's replacing Byram next to Dahlin.

I think I would pass on that one. Power for Byfield would be interesting (no adds on either side), but Clarke holds no interest for me. He's not supplanting Dahlin on the power play and his defensive play leaves a lot to be desired. I think the top 3 protected pick could get us a more suitable RD in Radim Mrtka.

Now do every single one for the last four years since we last retained on anything

We’ll wait.

They haven’t even retained on guys they were selling…when they’re saving money either way. It’s save every penny even though kicking in anything would help your franchise.
