NHL team branding that you like, dislike, or have an opinion about

Even as a Wings fan, the Red Wings branding Detroit "Hockeytown" and even trademarking it was pretty ridiculous and embarrassing.

If anything it's football town. Fans kept faithfully following the Lions in spite of decades of reasons not to, whereas when it was the Dead Wings people stopped coming to Joe Louis.

On the positive side, I loved Florida's rebrand. It's just so clean. It's both really detailed but not busy at all. It's a super local mascot, and the colors are a natural fit. In particular I like the shoulder logo.

The stick and palm tree jerseys had great potential, but they ruined them with the ugly shades of yellow/red on top of black. That and the diagonal sleeve stripes look cheap and amateurish. But I'd love this as an alternate if they made slight changes.

I love the suburst logo (not too big a fan of the teal backdrop though) but the Florida rebrand is awful in my book compared to what they had in the nineties, second worst only to the Ducks rebrand.

The neon green Stars also bother me a bit.

Hate to say it but Colorado's modern refreshes of their logos are some of my favorite, though I do prefer the OG Avs logo and colors the most.

Smashville is/was lamer.

Everyone is going to have wildly different opinions, so trigger warning: Islanders and Red Wings have amazing logos and jerseys. Flyers logo is great too but jersey is meh. Predators's branding is puke worthy. Florida's new look is terrible. Hurricanes are just confusing and boring. Use the black with grey shoulders and make a full set with that. Why are all 3 of their jerseys so different? Washington is inexplicably bad. Seattle and Montreal are overrated but still alright. Old San Jose is soooo much better than anything they've done since. Tampa Bay is ultra boring. Every other team ranges from meh to good I guess. I miss the Coyotes branding.

I'm just gonna do everyone.

  • Anaheim Ducks - Dig it... except the orange pants.
  • Boston Bruins - Dig it
  • Buffalo Sabres - Dig it
  • Calgary Flames - Love the OG stuff, f***ing hate blasty
  • Carolina Hurricanes - Dig it for the most part... just drop the wordmark jersey and add the warning flag trim to the black
  • Chicago Blackhawks - I've always been meh on it, don't love it, don't hate it
  • Colorado Avalanche - Dig it
  • Columbus Blue Jackets - It's pretty decent... love the cannon roundel logo and jerseys, I think the regular homes would look better if there was a contrast on teh full sleeve yokes
  • Dallas Stars - Dig it... except the glow in the dark crap
  • Detroit Red Wings - dig it... classic and clean
  • Edmonton Oilers... stop f***ing around with your jerseys, stick with the 80s look you had it right, no more changing the shade or trying to make orange as a primary color work 🤮... if you're gonna f*** around do it with a 3rd and RR.
  • Florida Panthers... dig it
  • Los Angeles Kings... it's cool... but give me yellow and purple with the crown please, that shit was amazing.. also silver helmets should be destroyed
  • Minnesota Wild... LOVE the North Stars colors, but also curious how it would look with a touch of black. Wish the regular white had the striping the same as teh greens. Best logo in all of sport.
  • Montreal Canadiens... it's cool
  • Nashville Predators - I dig it for the most part, but I really prefer animal logos where you look at the face straight on rather than the side view
  • New Jersey Devils - bring back the christmas jerseys... or at teh very least bring back the hem stripes
  • New York Islanders - dig it, would like the lighthouse logo back in current colors as an alt
  • New York Rangers - Hate it. I f***ing loathe word mark jerseys, liberty jerseys are A+ tho
  • Ottawa Senators - Glad they dumped the 3D logo, but always been partial to the O jerseys
  • Philadelphia Flyers - Dig it
  • Pittsburgh Penguins - Dig the OG and 80s looks... f*** that ugly robo shit, also no f***ing gold, you're penguins not glittery vampires
  • San Jose Sharks - Dig it... just get black pants
  • Seattle Kraken - Hate it...logo is good but absolutely the ugliest jerseys in the NHL, I wouldn't insult my asshole by wiping with one
  • St. Louis Blues - Dig em, except when they had the red, wasn't a fan
  • Tampa Bay Lightning - they're alright, but much prefer the black with the roundel
  • Toronto Maple Leafs - Dig it, but kinda wouldn't mind the 80s jersey with the full sleeve yoke returning as a 3rd
  • Utah Mammoth - Dig em, except the word mark... but I think that will change in a couple years and is only still around so fans who bought jerseys in year one don't feel slighted... the U logo is dope
  • Vancouver Canucks - They're okay now that they removed "Vancouver" from the logo, but would still prefer the skate logo back, even if in current colors.
  • Vegas Golden Knights - dig it... except the gold helmets... burn them, burn them with fire
  • Washington Capitals - hate them... liked the W logo, I'll even settle for the Eagle logo, but wordmarks aren't f***ing logos because you add a stick and puck and why do they still have the shitty reebok template?
  • Winnipeg Jets - Like the retro stuff.... hate the compass logo and jerseys, the jersey template is the same as what FLA and EDM had in the reebok era.

Yo, the ads on this site make it impossible to use multi-quote. Ain’t nobody buying a jacket from that shit, and f*** you tylenol for playing an ad as I type this.

Anyway, Nashville. “Predator” has gotten a worse connotation in the past 10 years and the logo/color scheme suck anyways. Absolutely awful concept, just redo.

Anaheim- go back to your 1994 jerseys FFS. Orange is terrible, unless you change your name to Anaheim Duck Sauce.

Colorado- just minor stuff- go back to black pants/helmets, and fix your nameplates/numbers. Not a fan of all the ice blue

Minnesota- go to North Stars colors full time. On a side note I find it hilarious that every younger person on here sees them and says "Subway! LOL" while all of us geezers are saying "cool, North Stars colors, that takes me back!" I also wouldn't mind seeing the original all-green uniforms from 2000 come back. Just no more red, it doesn't suit you.

Vancouver. I'm so tired of the orca logo. Go back to the 1994 logo and colors.

"Silver Knights" would have fitted the Silver State.
"Desert Knights" would have been a little cheesey, but it would have lent itself to unique colors and logos. Instead, we got one of the most boring and underdeveloped logos in sports.
What’s a desert knight though? Aren’t knights from England/france/Western Europe?

Silver Knights makes sense geographically but VegaS-Silver Knights sounds awkward - seems like teams have (mostly) avoided such “doubled” consonants across major sports for that same reason.

I actually don’t mind Golden Knights. I agree that the logo and and color scheme is incredibly underwhelming though, given the potential.

I've always hated Vegas' branding. I thought dropping the "Las" was gimmicky and only because it would make Foley's "[Adjective] Knights" obsession too clunky.

And "Golden Knights" was the worst of the three options. "Silver Knights" would have fitted the Silver State. Silver/gray also looks way nicer on the ice than their morning piss yellow. "Desert Knights" would have been a little cheesey, but it would have lent itself to unique colors and logos. Instead, we got one of the most boring and underdeveloped logos in sports.
God same, everything Golden Knights looks as if the NHL2002 team creator spat it out. I can't believe professional graphics designers made something so bland and flat.
For all of the other major failings of the management/ownership for the Yotes as a team, I've always thought their jerseys were generally slick.

Same as the Thrashers, sans the purple one.
Agree about Yotes, especially the green and black checker board thing.

Thrashers were always a bit too busy looking IMO

Ive always taken to referring to that shade of blue as Hockey Night in Canada blue, back in the 80s they branded everything that colour including the announcers jackets and it looked snazzy.

That Jersey would work with a better logo

The Devils’ branding checks a lot of boxes:

- distinctive name that’s a nod to local history/folklore

- brilliant logo

- strong/aggressive color scheme (teams wearing red have a proven advantage over teams that don’t)

Only thing I would change is adding a bit more color as an accent - I find their current setup a little too boring and generic.

^^Love this version: the blue is close enough to black that it’s not a massive departure from tradition, and the blue/yellow/red combo is a subtle homage to the team’s origins as the Colorado Rockies.

I hate the lack of waist striping. drives me nuts... the OF red and black and Christmas jerseys were gorgeous though
I'll never understand what goes on in people's heads when they go for stripe deletion on socks and jerseys as a change. What was the last hockey jersey you can remember that had a genuinely excessive number of stripes anyways? All the blank space opened up on the jersey after the change just looks weirdly empty.

On a slight tangent, I can't believe how bland the designs on modern jerseys have actually been considering we've had the option for custom digitally printed designs for at least 15 years now and literally none of the new jerseys use it. The Kraken should have had tentacles or a sailors knot across the arms with lots of nautical motifs, not a deranged S with glowing eyes escaped from a courage the cowardly dog cartoon.

Think about it, modern NHL jerseys are more a consumer product now than they ever have been since people pay 100-200$ a pop for something that looks good and this is the best they could do?
I personally found their previous color scheme and logo ugly. The orca, along with blue and green colors, perfectly capture the Pacific Northwest.
The orca concept is okay, the actual version on the jerseys is butt ugly, not realistic enough to look good, too visually busy to remember as an image in your head.

Stop and try to make a quick sketch of that logo you've seen a million times without looking at a picture. I'll guarantee it'll be mush because it's a bad logo.

As a Seattle resident, I was really excited about getting a team here. I was just hoping please don't name them the Kraken. Cascades was my personal choice, but that was far down the list. Emeralds or Totems was my choice for the main frontrunners. Instead they chose a drunk frat boy type of name. So many great names to choose from to capture the Pacific Northwest and you choose that.

I have a lot of opinions on these but I go back on forth on which bothers me the most

Currently probably the most irritating one is Washington's branding
Their jersey designs are terrible (it's a shame that all Ovi highlights are in those jerseys) and the wordmark looks bad
Even worse, they then use that bad wordmark as their logo instead of an actual logo
Even worse still, they actually already have a logo (shoulder patch/Weagle) and that logo is awesome! It's so baffling that despite having a pretty nice logo they use some ugly wordmark on official branding
At least NHL.com and some channels etc. are starting to show the Weagle more so hopefully they're moving towards that

I also feel like they've gone through 600 iterations of the green and blue/orca logo uniforms since the late 90s. "VANCOUVER" wordmark to no Vancouver wordmark, brought back the hockey stick in a rink and the demented lumberjack, the late 90s wine and tin foil silver trim with dark blue "Messier-era" jerseys, etc. It's weird how their team colors are all over the place through the last 3 decades.

You think it should look more realistic as in more like an orca?

Or more realistic as in more similar stylistically to the indigenous artwork it’s inspired by?

No matter what your favourite colour is, at some point the Canucks have ruined it.

The Ducks’ original jerseys were gorgeous. Everything since then is why drugs are bad.

Nashville’s logo has always been terrible, but the OG jerseys were nice. That mustard yellow they wear now is worse than when Linda Blair threw up in The Exorcist.
