League News: NHL Talk - (News n' Scores n' Stuff) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

I have been thinking about a Stamkos trade. I think he might be very cheap to add. He plays pretty much the same game as Ovie so I have a hard time finding a way to fit in. 4 years at 8 mill is a alot of money for someone trending down.
not at all interested in Stamkos. at this point in his career, he's everything people have so often accused Ovie of being: a one-trick pony. and it's a trick the Caps don't need more of. we need dynamic play driving. he's not that guy

Could Carolina flip Rantanen after the 4 nations? A goal and an assist since the trade happened and he still hasn’t signed an extension. Could be two years in a row that they let the prize rental acquisition walk for free. Meanwhile Necas has 9 points in 8 games.

Yeah, it's been discussed in the media that if they determine they can't sign him that they might trade him at the TDL.

The closer we get to the deadline while he has no contract the likelier it gets.

Canes owner wants a superstar and seems willing to even overpay for one but he also said they don't want same to happen that did with Guentzel. So it's either contract or a trade.

I don't think he actually wants to stay in Carolina so will be interesting to see what happens. I wonder if he ends up in Colorado in the summer even. But anyway as he seems to want to hit the market there's going to be silly amount of teams in on him and Caps propably one of those teams for sure. He fits their mold of a player.

The fact that Friedman was already putting it out there that Rantanen "didn't want to rush a decision" and "is still in shock" makes me feel like he's going to test UFA. Obviously the 8th year is a big deal but especially for someone who probably will be the highest paid guy in the league I'd rather make $98M (14x7) and choose the exact spot I want to live than $108M (13.5x8) in a place I don't!

The NHL trips over its own feet again. Regardless of the eventual quality of the product or the concept itself, the 4 Nations thing seems like a sketchy marketing idea that steps all over other lost opportunities.

When the Super Bowl is over there's a sports vacuum until March Madness. This is the PERFECT time to sell the shit out of the NHL itself, to all cities, with several games on a daily basis. Give the fans and gamblers something to pay attention to now that football is over.

But no, instead they cobble together this 3 game round robin amongst 4 teams. How many games? 3 per team then a championship? 13 games (edit: 7) in the 10 days following the Super Bowl?

Just incredibly stupid marketing.

I assume the Jonas Bros or 3 Doors Down will play the anthems at every game.

It's 6 games + final. So 7 in total.

The NBA in-season tournament is a success….just mimicking it to some extent.

I’d expect the ratings to show this will be a marketing success. Let’s see.

I just hope there isn’t a major injury during the tournament. I like the fact that they got rid of the stupid all star festivities. All star games are so stale at this point.

Friedman has mentioned a few times that they didn’t want to do the tournament earlier in the year because they didn’t want to compete with the NFL.

I’m with goon, this is probably gonna be dud. The average ‘Murican sports fan couldn’t care less about Finland ( much less find it on a map ) or Sweden.

It’ll be 90% die hard hockey fans tuning in, the remaining 10% will be - WTH is this, I guess I’ll check it out?

Fans may take a break from hockey as well. But i certainly take this over an all-star break. I’m just a bit bitter that there are zero Caps in this tournament.

I actually put the BC/BU game in my calendar for tonight so i didn’t forget about it!

I’m betting they draw better ratings than your average Detroit vs NY or Minn vs Chicago games….I think it will draw eyes, we’ll see.

I see this as a blessing. Our guys get to rest and recover from injuries and don't risk injuries playing in a tournament that means nothing. Can you imagine Carlson, PLD, Willy, or LT getting hurt in this?

I think the 4N thing will flop. I get they're trying to appeal to people's nationalistic pride in attracting new viewers, but it feels very 'forced'. Like if Wish.com were to sponsor the winter olympics.

I love watching hockey and might not care enough to watch more than 1 game of this.
