Vancouver arguably lost both of those trades yesterday. What in the world are they doing?
Going for it I guess. I mean, I don't think they did that bad in the Miller trade. They didn't have any leverage and were then able to flip that first to add Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor. And also dump Heinen/Desharnais. That's a fair bit of sludge removed from their roster. Mancini could be a decent depth D for them and Chytil (if he can stay healthy) could also rebound ala Kakko.

But it also IMO says a lot about how the mid-first of this upcoming draft is valued. Right around 15 I'd struggle for a significant portion of the remainder of the first to believe I'm getting significant value. NYR is currently tied for the 11th pick and it's top 13 protected but unprotected in '26. Most likely you'd think NYR will continue to rise in the standings and Dolan will see to it that NYR continues to load up.

It at least makes the Metro more interesting between this and the Rantanen trade. NJD needs to respond. WSH definitely needs to respond in time I think. There's ample room for improvement up front beyond whatever Leonard will eventually supply.

Wasn't Outlaws a USFL football team or something? Not that it matters. That's clearly going to win. Like they've set up the voting so it has to win because Mammoth is terrible and they definitely don't want to stay "Utah Hockey Team" with a logo that looks as generic as the name.

Utah is the "Beehive State" with a hive on its flag. They should consider "Swarm" though that wouldn't be 100% original either. I generally don't like nicknames that can't be singularized (he's a capital, she's a Mystic, etc) but Avalanche beats the odds.

Moot point, it will be Outlaws. /shrug

Chytil has done way more than Lapierre in the NHL.
I should hope so. Chytil was drafted 3 seasons prior. Worth noting that Chytil's break out year was his 6th year post draft. Lappy is in his 5th.

Caps should remain focused on what makes sense regarding their roster and not worry about 'responding' to other teams. That's how you make a bad trade or disrupt your own team's chemistry (Shattenkirk).

Utah Buzz with the arena nickname of the Hive, better than team, Mammoths, or outlaws.

I like the final offering from the list below, although it might offend LDS sensitivities:
  • Rabble: Often used when bees appear agitated or disturbed
The most widely used collective noun for bees is swarm, which specifically describes a large group of bees moving together, typically when searching for a new home. A swarm can contain thousands of worker bees following their queen to establish a new colony.

Other fundamental collective terms include:

  • Colony: Represents the entire social structure, including workers, drones, and queen
  • Hive: Refers to bees living together in a structured habitat
  • Nest: Describes the physical structure where bees reside
  • Cluster: Indicates bees huddling together, often for warmth

Traditional and Historical Terms

Several traditional collective nouns have emerged over time, each with unique connotations:
  • Bike: An old English term for a bee colony
  • Charm: A poetic term emphasizing the mesmerizing nature of bee groups
  • Grist: Historically used to describe working bees
  • Erst: A traditional term for an established colony
  • Rabble: Often used when bees appear agitated or disturbed

This is one of the more remarkable seasons I can recall in the Cap Era as far as in-season player movement.

Enjoyable.
Every time an East team deal makes a deal lately I’m miserable, could easily face NYR and Canes 1st 2 rounds plus Pens just got a mid 1st for a rental. Wife asks what’s wrong, I say everybody knows the East’s wide open, in so many words.

Was curious about the remaining 2025 first rounders in play. CGY, CBJ & PHI have multiples to work with if they want to be aggressive buyers. OTT, VAN & BOS still have theirs in the bubble range. Then among the later firsts among more serious contenders it's really just LAK, CAR, WSH & WPG that have not moved theirs yet. Others, of course, could move 2026 picks. But it's interesting how few remain in play (and how many have already changed hands).

Piggybacking off of my previous post: who remains that feasibly could net a first rounder? Based on the various media trade boards at least I'd say Nelson, perhaps John Gibson from a G needy team, Cozens, Byram, O'Reilly and maybe Laughton (based on the past reported asks). That's setting aside Pettersson for now under the assumption VAN will see how it goes minus Miller, esp. since they've bought.

Perhaps others emerge out of the woodwork but outside of O'Reilly I don't think there's much alignment between the market and Washington's needs. I'm not sure Nelson is the guy they need. While acquiring another two seasons of ROR could carry some risk the AAV does make it fairly manageable. Having either him or Strome in the nominal three hole would be quite a luxury. It would also be insurance in case Dowd leaves (likely no room for him if he wants 3C coin and probably something they should avoid either way).

My thing would be: how much more effective does Boeser make a line with Ovechkin and Strome? Is he diligent enough? Probably not. Decent player but I go back to their center depth being the biggest issue in disbelieving they have a deep run in them.

They could stand to pretty easily upgrade over Raddysh/Frank. They're the lowest-hanging fruit and they could also slot Boeser on the third line I guess. But he doesn't seem like a move that would be a finalizer nor is he much of an extension candidate all things considered.

my point wasn't so much about "outlaws" as about having the fans -- just those in the arena (waiting in long lines to vote) -- choose the name.

Boeser knows how to finish and that is the best way to make any line better. Out of all possible candidates for a trade he's the most obvious one if you want a scorer. If you want a puck carrier that will make things happen or an elite middle six center - that would fetch more than a 1st. Not sure there's an interesting option out there for that.

Of all things this team needs to improve on, finishing chances might be dead last on the list.

They need more drivers. Right now they've got two up front - Dubois and Protas. Stick Wilson with one of them and you've got two pieces of a great line (or stick all three together and you've got a beast of a line). I'm not sold on the other three dudes in the top six being consistent drivers in the playoffs, GOAT included at his age. Leonard could be one right away, but he also might not be. A trade for anything less than a driver like those guys is just window dressing IMO.
