The vast majority of athletes in the states don't play hockey. That is the bigger issue. Getting kids with tremendous athletic talent to pick up hockey vs. baseball, football and basketball is an uphill battle here. That is why you see places like Minnesota, Mass and NY being the prime places US NHLers come from. Hockey has some roots in those states. They need to get Texas, NJ, CA and Florida (the biggest football recruiting states etc) on board. The game just isn't that popular. Dads in the US relate to taking their son to baseball practice or football practice because that is what they played when they were kids. Add to this the growing popularity of having your kid play soccer because it is "safer" doesn't bode well for contact sports in general and Hockey specifically

More bored kids need to pick up street hockey. The only real gear you need is a hockey stick because you can play with sneakers, a tennis ball, and a makeshift net. I used to lace up some old cushion foam as goalie pads and use a catcher's mask. That gets them interested and the ones with talent will filter eventually through the system

I agree. I am surprised it isnt more popular. We used to play street hockey in gym class all throughout elementary school, they even had a club at the college I went to.

It was by far one of the more popular gym class activities for both boys and girls when I was a kid. BUt I grew up in CT and it seems CT has a few NHLers now and in recent past. Perhaps this is again just a North East / New England kind of thing

Rollerblade hockey became really popular when I was in middle school. That was awesome. Kids would skate from all over to meet up and have games all day etc. I couldn't ice skate for shyte but I could skate on rollerblades really really well until i blew my ankles out in lacrosse
