Now that the NHL's expansion franchise (finally) has an identity, attention turns toward the intricate process of assembling a competitive roster of spare parts from the other 30 teams. A Sportsnet report on Wednesday revealed a preliminary list of 66 players who will be off limits to the Vegas Golden Knights.

New York Islanders
Johnny Boychuk
Andrew Ladd
John Tavares

Do I smell some hope here?

Thank you for posting this article. Really, this had some good info on players who must be protected but it also had this little gem:
The report cites an internal memo recently distributed to NHL clubs that outlines which players have no-movement clauses in their contracts, thus rendering them exempt from June's expansion draft. Any player who possesses the NMC at the time of the draft must be protected by his team, unless the clause is waived. And though most of the names on the list were expected, a few might come as a disappointment for cash-strapped clubs hoping to unload a bad contract as Vegas attempts to reach its salary cap floor.
I didn't know this. I can't see a veteran tossing his NMC for an expansion team, but there is one huge reason for someone to do it: NO STATE INCOME TAX! Does this potentially change anything for Boychuk, Ladd, Halak, etc? When you are making millions, going from 8% to 0% is a great deal of money, and if you live in the right community the cost of living is lower as well.

My question is, the blackhawks have 8 guys with NMC. Are they really allowed to protect all 8 while everyone else is only allowed to protect 7? Kind of an unfair variable, depending how you look at it. You either need to expand it to 8 protected players for everyone or force them to expose a player with a NMC.

Not sure how Hjalmarsson's contract is structured. He's listed as a modified NTC and a NMC, so I'm guessing the NMC only kicks in at a certain point in his contract?

I think NTC's aren't automatically protected.

Yeah, it's unlikely that any veteran would waive. The only way I could see one doing it is if they are on such a bad contract and they know they won't get picked up, allowing their team to protect more players. Big gamble though.

Yeah, according to the list there protected list is set which leaves Panarin exposed. I don't know what they are going to do. I know what PK is saying, but this list took everything into account so I don't see anything helping them but another negative trade to allow them to protect Panarin.

I'm trying to think of all the things we can do to Ladd to get him to waive his NMC to go to Vegas (like they would take him)

1. Call up Ho-Sang and put his locker next to Ladds
2. Daily team meetings with just Ladd and Capuano in the room
3. A night out on the town with Snow putting his marriage in distress
4. Weekly run ins with Malkin's 'friends' from Russia
5. Slushy ice (wait, we are already doing that one)
6. Changing his spot on the bench to the driver's seat of the SUV (wait, he might like that)
7. Relegation to the fourth line (already doing that one too)
8. Announcers saying Bad instead of Ladd.
9. Calling him Drew
10. Islander wives inviting Ladd's wife to luncheons but never showing up

let me know if I left any out!

I will remain hopeful. Expose a good piece we know they want with the understanding they take a cap relief project as well.

We need to send Ladd on a nice little trip to Vegas. Put a brick of hundreds in his pocket, send him out on a private jet and hope he wants to stay.
