I was pretty critical of the team in the first period of this game, but they definitely circled the wagons. also Harvey seemed to be a real calming influence in the 3rd period. maybe I should read more into Helvig's performance. if so, then the Canes should sign Harvey and put him in Charlotte.

I didn't see a whole lot of this, just about half a period beginning when it was 4-2.

In that time, I saw the following from Priskie:
- On the 4-on-3 power play, the Canes very deliberately had Suzuki deep below the goal line to the left of the net, playing catch with the dman on that side and another forward low on the other side. The play was to draw the defenders down, then move the puck quickly to Priskie for a slap shot from the right point. He got two clean ones that I saw.
- Almost immediately afterward, he got absolutely torched on a 2-2 rush where the Pred forward turnstiled him and cut across the front of the net to score the backbreaking goal.
- As mentioned above, an almost casual, silky-smooth shootout goal.

A little RHD wearing #7 out there bombing slapshots and showing silky mitts and getting dunked on defensively. I'm just saying.

I keep hearing Murray surprised people and played very well throughout the showcase. What did you guys think?

his production in juniors was already pretty good, but people wondered if he had any elite traits. in these 3 games he showed me some good zone entries and a better wrist shot than i anticipated. enough for me to think he’s worth keeping an eye on for a potential ELC in a year or two.

Meanwhile, back in Traverse City, the Blackhawks lost four prospects to injury in the first period when Minnesota’s invitee-heavy lineup took the “hit everything that moves” page out of Columbus’ playbook.

Among those injured:

2018 #8 OA Adam Boqvist
2019 #3 OA Kirby Dach

So basically it’s a good thing we didn’t go to Traverse City

Didn't get to see him in game 3 since I was stuck at work, but game 2 he really seemed to gel nicely with Rees. He's a bit quicker than expected and he gets off his wrist shot deceptively fast with solid accuracy. an

Didn't get much of an impression in game 1 and I like to think that game didn't actually happen

Sounds like Torey Krug.

the thing about these tournaments is that you're not really looking at defensive work as much due to lack of familiarity and system. you're not even really looking at offensive work with a really discerning eye. this is glorified shinny and the scores usually indicate as much. the things that were most interesting to me in this tournament is looking at the skill levels of certain players and seeing if anyone has traits that stand out as nhl traits. suzuki has nhl level traits of course. he was great with the puck on his stick but there's still a lot of risk in his game he'll have to mitigate over time. priskie is another that showed nhl skills. his skating and creativity were at the forefront in a group that aside from sellgren was bereft of it. i would say the tournament was a net gain for his stature in the organization. sellgren to me looked iffy, which was surprising. i was expecting him to jump off the page considering the amount of hype that has started to follow him. i would say bean and priskie both had more impressive showings than he did. priskie also did a great job with zone entries and was one of a few hurricanes skaters that looked comfortable doing it.

luostarinen looked a little rough to me, but this isn't the type of tournament a player like him will look good in. the positive is that he showed a willingness to go to the front of the net and whack around. he'll need that as he's not naturally skilled enough to play in a top 9 without that element. i've always been fairly bullish on that pick as being a reach and his showing here didn't really inspire a lot of confidence.

the invites were across the board unimpressive. leif mattson was one of the few that i would consider offering an echl/ahl deal. his skating looked strong and his penalty killing up top was aggressive and smart. the goalies were predictably left out to dry, so there's little to gain evaluating there.
