That franchise made out like bandits from that trade and won the cup a few years later as a direct result. Hard to imagine things working out any better had they actually kept him.

Just because a team drafts a player doesn’t mean they owe some debt of gratitude to that team, let alone the people that live in that city. Players are human beings, trying to look out for what’s best for them and their families. That trumps the rooting interests of fans 100 times out of 100. Each team knows they run the risk of not being able to sign a draft pick, and it’s on them to make the best deal they can if that ends up happening.

If you want to boo-hoo for someone, do it for the NJ Devils. Gretzky and his dad orchestrated that sketchy “personal services contract” that ensured he wouldn’t end up drafted by a bottom feeder when the WHA inevitably joined the NHL. As a result, the Devils didn’t even get the satisfaction of being able to trade his rights for a huge haul.

Jeff Skinner is a great example. A good but not a great player in his career and he's been in the league for over 10 years now. Got bought out last summer and will likely be team hopping for the next few seasons (so lots of moving) until retirement.

It's crazy to me that Trouba and his agent specifically negotiated a contract where his NMC ended with two years left, and then got mad when the team took advantage of it.

Why did he think the Rangers wanted the final two years to only have a NTC?

These guys make a ton. Even someone like Loui Eriksson who had a very short prime and then went straight downhill from there managed to make a ton in his career.

Wild, but being a professional athlete is lucrative even though hockey seems to be on the low end, it's still A LOT. McDavid is the cream of the crop, he's currently sitting at approx 95.6M, not a stretch to think he won't hit 200M+ by the time he hangs em up.

The deal also would've looked different had the cap gone up the way it was anticipated to. These 5% bumps are nicer than the $1m bumps, but the cap would've been nearing $100m right now without Covid. Those increases were expected by pretty much every long term contract signed between 2016 and 2020.

Hate this excuse each and every time it is used to justify a dumb contract.

Proper management should include risk assessment and assuming the good times will last forever is one of the most common management mistakes.

I think that's the thing that pissed players off. It's a scummy way to do business period, but the captain ? It isn't a loophole or anything but there is obviously no respect there, just isn't the ethical way to do things.
