NHL Ownership Grades (The Athletic)

And, apparently, have the luxury of being in warm weather states with lower taxes which allows them to pay less and have more.

The chicken came first. The egg is just an owner reaping hilariously lopsided benefits

Why wasn't Dallas attracting top talent during like 2012/2013 during bankruptcy then?? No tax then.. hmm odd.

Good players always had FL on their no-go lists. Most good players they drafted were happy to get out of FL the first chance they had to go to a real organization (some just wouldn’t come to begin with).
No one ever cried about FL having a great tax advantage back then :dunno:
Nowadays, according to some, it’s the biggest factor in why they are good.

Just like no one was flocking to Dallas during the bankruptcy years despite have no income tax.

How are you able to post gifs?
Im proof a phone and a grade 3 education is all you need.

So for the Flyers it depends. If they mean Dan Hilferty who took over last year, I'd say he should score higher, as the CEO representing ownership. He is way better than Dave Scott who came before. If it's about Comcast-Spectacor as a whole, right where it should be. Absentee corporate ownership, but it's been a little better under Hilferty.

I'm not a fan of the Jacobses, but they spend to the cap, don't meddle, and they built the arena with their own money. What are the other guys doing that's better?

Why is TBL an A+? What's better than in the rest of the A's?
You seriously do not know? Voted best organization in sports more than once. All sports. Not just hockey. Not sure how the new ownership group will run things but Vinik is a proven "best of the best" owner.

Not bad for a "southern" team.

Yeah...3 cups in 24 years. Not bad...

It's still a recent phenomenon. The first days of the Cap saw small market teams get an advantage because they could pick up good Cap dumps. Like Carolina and Edmonton did. But it didn't stop the allure of markets like Detroit, Boston, New York, Chicago, Philly, Pitt, L.A, Anaheim from picking up good players, because they were contending teams.

Tampa was pretty bad for a long time. Florida was at the risk of moving until Viola and company took over.

It's a very recent phenomenon that taxes have played a part in player movement. I think it's business savvy, maybe agent influenced.

I remember it starting to be a topic of discussion in 2016, when Stamkos signed an extension with Tampa, after being wooed by Toronto. The argument went that he was able to re-sign with Tampa for a lower salary than what the Leafs could offer because of taxes. It was played up as a major, if not the, reason he didn't sign in Toronto.

Still waiting for the proponents of the state tax theory to explain why it manifests in the NHL but doesn’t exist in the NFL.

There's a reason they want Vinik to own the Rays lol, Having recently moved to FL and somewhat close to TB (Orlando area) its incredible the pull the Lightning have over there, of course success helps but they are really all over the place there and one can argue one of the few US markets where the hockey team is close to being #1 in that town. They pretty much sell out every game

Why , what did he do?

This seems like a table that shows how much fans bitch about owners

I don’t bitch about the owner, I just know the owner is a bitch. f*** you Terry, all that money and you’re still dumb as shit. Congrats on getting rich by f***ing up the planet tho, that’s super awesome.

Worst owner, worst human, let’s go Buffalo.

I think we all knew who was going to be last and it wasn’t close. I would have put Francesco Tortellini in a tie for last personally.

I’m the past FA has been a meddling owner, the last few years he’s done well to distance himself from the team. Seems its purely from a fan ranking point of view:

One of the most intense fan bases in all of pro sports, Canucks supporters have had to deal with a lot in recent years. Vancouver has missed the playoffs in seven of the past nine years, and the GM tenure of Jim Benning (2014-21) was one of the most disastrous in NHL history.
Even with more stability in place now and the front office cleaning up a lot of the mess, the fan base hasn’t forgiven or forgotten, ranking ownership 30th in franchise stability and 31st in treatment of the fan base. It’s likely going to take a period of sustained success for Aquilini to win over the market.

Surprised that Rangers with Dolan are not D+ or D either, considering how much internal anger there has been with Chris Drury from the players.

Also, Pegula is bad because of an itchy trigger finger when it comes to GM and coaches, then hiring horrible people to replace those positions from the horrible people who were hired previously. No offence to Adams, he seems like a nice bloke, but all the moves he has made seem to be more of the same than actually fixing the issue. Cozens will be the next wave of players rebounding outside of Buffalo, and they were rumoured to want to trade Peterka, Kulich, and Byram on top of that lol.

Exactly

I think Aquilini was neutered for about 8 months, and he just can't help himself. And it's 100% his right, he;s the owner, and can do what he wants.

but he just has to get involved, he is incredibly active around the team every single deadline, and could have had a consistent playoff team, maybe not a winner, but a consistent playoff team if he let a proper rebuild occur.
Aquilini is definitely an F-level owner for me. He hates rebuilding and wants to always be competitive, that is as bad as a path you will implement as a sports owner.

What's the beef with Fedorov? First I hear of this.

"Brian Burke, who had just joined the Mighty Ducks as general manager, found that Fedorov was less interested in contributing to the team, as he had with the Red Wings, than he was enjoying the nightlife in Los Angeles where he would be riding back in limos at 3 to 4am even on game days. Burke was so concerned that Fedorov 'was a bad influence in the dressing room,' and that 'other players were starting to follow his lead,' that he sent rookies Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry to the Ducks' AHL minor league team solely to get them away from Fedorov."
