NHL Ownership Grades (The Athletic)

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I think we all knew who was going to be last and it wasn’t close. I would have put Francesco Tortellini in a tie for last personally.

Notice all lot of the top teams on this list have become destination teams for top free agents. While some want to blame "no state income tax", a lot more than that factors into it including great ownership.

As a Tampa fan I hate to give the Panthers any praise but my boys just played in a ball hockey tournament put on by the Panthers outside their arena this weekend and they went above and beyond making it a great event for the kids. The best owners not only invest in their team and players but also in the community to support and grow the fanbase.

And, apparently, have the luxury of being in warm weather states with lower taxes which allows them to pay less and have more.

The chicken came first. The egg is just an owner reaping hilariously lopsided benefits

Toronto should get an F.

Richest team in the league and in the last 20 years has won 1 playoff round.
Top line revenue does not translate to success. See: Rangers, New York. The Leafs and Rangers are tourist attractions.

Believe it or not when Jeff Vinik bought the Lightning in 2010, Tampa already had warm weather and also had no state income tax. The team was crap, the previous ownership was a total embarrassment, the team was going broke, fan support was slipping. New ownership that cared about building a first rate organization was what changed everything.

The top team in the league tied with the worst. How is this possible? Other than it is a stupid list, kind of stuff you'd read on Facebook. Jets owner is smart because he stays out of hockey ops. And runs a good small market franchise that has made the playoffs 7 of last 8 years, against the odds.

Am I missing something with Winnipeg being that low? The guy is the owner of one of the harshest and smallest markets in the league and has managed to keep them as a consistent playoff contender for almost a decade now. Are Jets fans not a fan of the guy?
