Seems like there are discussion of a 2024 World Cup of Hockey: NHL, NHLPA discussing potential 2024 World Cup of Hockey - TSN.ca

It is about time, it will be eight years out of the last best-on-best tournament. I really hope they skip gimmicky teams this time and give at least Switzerland, Germany and Slovakia their own teams.

Maybe a 10 teams tournament (2 groups of 5)? Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czechia, Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland and one more team (Denmark/Belarus/Austria/Latvia/Norway?)

I hope team north America comes back.

most exciting team of the tournament and would be a much better choice than Denmark/Belarus/Austria/Latvia/Norway

Hopefully no gimmick teams.

Get the IIHF on board and do a proper tournament with countries only.

Although they may their eye on an under-23 team with Michkov, Bedard, Wright, Zegras, Hughes, Seider, Raymond, Stutzle, and others. Just like they did with Team North America by using Eichel, McDavid, and Matthews as the main attraction.

If they're getting the IIHF on board, I don't see them using gimmick teams. The individual delegations would be pissed if they did that U23 nonsense. The US got f***ed over pretty hard in 2016 from Team NA, I can't imagine they'd be too happy.

Yes, it also might have robbed us of the opportunity to see Crosby and McDavid together. Crosby will 37 in 2024... Sure he can still be productive then, but who knows? You get injury prone at that age as well.

Plus, I think it is also a disservice at the up-and-coming nations who misses their spots. Germany and Switzerland definitely deserves their own team. Slovakia has been on a decline but has a lot of up-and-coming talent such Slafkovsky, Nemec, Dvorsky.

I hope that they do bring it back as long as there are no gimmick teams. Leave the 2016 edition buried. At the very least all of the talk since then, from what I've seen, from the NHL's end is that they won't bring back the gimmicks, even if they won't admit that they were shit.

Not seeing McDavid and Crosby playing together right now is devastating. However.... McDavid and MacKinnon with Bedard and Wright is going to be a wagon of a team to watch.

Germany and Switzerland most certainly deserve their spots if they're doing an 8 team format.

Wonder what the host site(s) will be. I think they should do 2 host cities. They should absolutely refrain from hosting in Toronto again, it's gotten stale.

I'm sure they have received so much negative feedback concerning the gimmick-teams that they won't make the same mistake again.

My preferable format would be that of the old Canada-cup with six teams only but realistically speaking it is impossible to ignore Germany and then you can have Switzerland along as well but eight teams is the absolute maximum.

They would have to get buy in from other leagues. how many teams are made exclusively of NHLers?
Canada
US
Sweden
Finland
Maybe Russia
Other countries all need to draw players from elsewhere.

Absolutely no gimmick teams otherwise it’ll be even less watchable than the NHL less Olympics.

That 2016 edition was a complete disaster and just a circus act of a tournament, I’d rather watch the Spengler than a best of 3 with “leftover Europe”.

There isn't enough class for 12 teams. Actually there isn't enough class for 8 teams either but you must include Germany there.

why not 2022?

2022 World Cup.
2024 Olympic

the more best on best the better. Why cram it all for one year?

I think you are missing something. Next winter Olympics is 2026, so 2024 makes sense for a World Cup of Hockey.

To make up for this year's Olympic debacle they should host one in September of this year and then another in '24. but I'll settle for '24. as long as they keep the gimmicky teams in the trash heap of history.

There's every year the 16-team world championships where you can "grow the game".

Don't spoil a best on best-tournament by having too many too weak teams.

I would say six teams but unfortunately you can't not have Germany so make it eight teams.

This is my hope as well.

And why would the NHL/NHLPA want teams made up of non-NHLers participating anyway? Simultaneously excluding stars like Kopitar just because their national teams aren't competitive.

Extremely interesting for the Europeans, let's do a WC there, where you can see these players play all year round at prime time anyway, to play such an event in Europe for a change is not possible, then the poor North American fans would have to watch games at inappropriate times
