NHL News/Notes XIX

Great news for the Sharks. Just as our window starts to open up, poverty franchises will start struggling to keep their stars due to internal budgets.
I’d extend Eklund ASAP before that all
Happens. He may just end up waiting but his price tag may have ultimately gone up 20%.

Yeah he should be offered the Guenther contract as soon as he's eligible.

Does Mitch Marner become a realistic possibility for us?

I hope not. He’s gonna be 28 and Ferris will negotiate like the cap’s already at 110. Besides, we need goalscorers, not playmakers.
We just need talented players. Marner is a superstar without much of an injury history so the typical aging curve concerns don't really apply.

13M will be today's equivalent of 10M by the time we need to pay Celebrini and Smith.

Sure but we’ll be paying Marner the equivalent of 10 for a guy who’s 32 or so. If we’re gonna spend I’d rather it be on a different superstar. I also don’t think he would be interested in coming here knowing he’ll be wasting at least the next 3 seasons on a loser.

Here's what really interests me: $113M USD is equivalent to about $163M CAD today. Not to get political on here but there are certain imminent events that could weaken the CAD significantly further. Is it over for Winnipeg and Ottawa?

Less Ottawa than Winnipeg but there’s a very real possibility. Every time I hear an American bitch about Canada not winning a cup it reminds me of how they don’t understand that economics more than nationality rules the league.
