They didn't need to get rid of Hall, though, so he must have been worth something. Probably not much, but something.

Colorado just has a different mentality. They've never been a "push all the chips in" team, and obviously, it's worked out for them. DW, and indeed many GMs, would have kept Rantanen for the impending playoff run.

It seems clear that they are making a bet on Necas, and that the value he adds in future years will offset the present value difference between him and Rantanen.
