NHL investigating Oilers usage of LTIR with Kane’s contract

You would think if the league cared they would monitor these injuries ongoing before the playoffs so teams couldn't get an unfair advantage during the playoffs. Kane wasn't even in the lineup for the 1st game of the playoffs. The Oilers never really benefited much from the LTIR anyway. They had a major player out of the lineup due to injury for the entire playoffs.

Reports are the oilers are under investigation.

AS a Canadian, me and others have always suggested that if a Canadian team pulled what US teams did? We would be investigated and guess what? It is happening?

In the future the NHL will need to investigate EVERY team that has a player get healthy "just in time for the playoffs"
Kane opened his mouth and said he could have returned before the PO.
It's not a case of "when a Canadian team did it" the NHL would care, they also investigated the Lupul situation in Toronto when he said he could play.
The Oilers couldn't keep chief idiot in check, so now they have to do some extra paperwork. It's not the NHL out to get Canada.

Oilers must pay a steep price for this malfeasance. Take their ‘27 and ‘28 1st round picks away.

Just change the rules so teams don’t exceed the cap in the playoffs. It’s not complicated.
When you are under the cap you accrue extra cap space and it helps with deadline deals. So teams during the regular season at the end in theory are above the cap.

I definitely think the NHL needs to solve LTIR abuse but not by making that the rule.

I will also add I think it is going to mostly solve itself with the rising cap.

Good. The speculation even before the playoffs I heard reported on TSN was the Oilers said if you want to be an Oiler come playoff time, you are staying on LTIR. So he complied. He was healthy at the TDL

That is blatantly breaking the rules. They should lose a first round pick.

Kane is the kind of guy who absolutely should work on keeping his mouth shut, because his brain isn't very often attached to it, and when it is it's clear that it's not working very well.

Kane, as a man of integrity, was simply being honest and said he felt ready to come back and play before the season ended. Doesn't mean the doctors agreed, or the team has to take that at face value. Punishing the team for a man's opinion would be pretty pathetic.

If Kane did say something, then he more or less let the cat out of the bag. The dude's lack of self-awareness is astounding. Meanwhile, there's at least "plausible deniability" with the rest of them.

Vegas - no problem
Tampa - no problem
Florida - no problem
Edmonton - Investigation

:skeptic:

Vegas, Tampa, Florida (and others) - stashing player on LTIR as per the CBA's rules, also seen as a "loophole" by many but still legal

Edmonton - stashing player on LTIR for the same exact purposes, except forward in question goes on social media blabbering on about how he's "ready to play but the team won't let him". :dunno:

that's fair. Maybe allow teams to add the accrued cap to the basic cap for a playoff roster? Just something so teams don't have to play games with returning players from injury. The rules as currently in place are clearly being played with by the teams and it should not hinge on which teams have players willing to play along with injuries they could return from before game one of the playoffs.

They already do investigate all LTIR cases

The man’s opinion is what doctors typically use to sign off on.

If Kane says he feels great, the doctor will clear him.

If Kane says he is still having issues, the doctor will not clear him.

Doctors opinions are heavily influenced by the patient during recovery.

Mean, how much info do we have as to whether other investigations occurred or not? I would suspect they’d investigate them all and perhaps they just aren’t public. Also, the amount of LTIR space being used would seem completely irrelevant
It's relevant. if you're going to game the system then use every penny of cap space. That extra 1.9 million could have brought in an extra 1 or 2 players with retention that might have made a difference in the Finals.

Instead of losing a pick they should have Kane's cap hit from last season applied to next season. And they should have their buy out privileges revoked for this offseason.
