If it was optional ice but the coach himself admitted in an ill-advised moment of candor, caught by media, that it wasn't really optional for the bubble guys/rookies, then that is indeed a problem.

It's collectively bargained rest time that is built into the schedule, time off that the PA fought to secure in past CBA negotiations. The issue isn't that the vets decide or decide not to go, clad in the warm embrace of their NMCs and lavish contracts that extend for another 7 or 8 years. It's the implications for players without any power whose vacation time is canceled by an unwritten expectation that an 'optional' practice isn't really optional for them at all.

The rule protects the little guy, not the veterans. Failure to act puts the league in danger of legal action by the PA. Because it's collectively bargained, the rules are black and white on such violations. The league needs to acknowledge that and punish the behavior, reiterating that it's no bueno.

When you provide an “option” to work over a holiday, it creates a culture where there is pressure to work over the holiday. Employers can judge employees who don’t show up for not wanting to put extra time in. Inevitably, employees feel they have to show up so they create the right impression at work, even though the organization officially declares a holiday/time off. The CBA declares holidays as days the employees don’t have to work and includes rules that employers have to follow to support this decision to protect players’ rights.

Nothing is stopping players from training or getting a sheet of ice away from the team and playing. It's to stop "optional" skates that really aren't optional if you're not a core player on the team during your holiday break.

NHL honestly has no choice in the matter, and the NHLPA has no choice but to hold their feet to the fire on it. The players negotiated a hard stop for the holidays into the CBA, so the NHL has no choice but to put it foot down in some way or the NHLPA could sue them for breach of contract.

The team isn't allowed to provide ice for the players to skate during certain period of time.

You wouldn't have that opinion if your team wasn't (potentially) facing a penalty for going against the rules.

The only way Dallas gets a fine in this is IF the skating coach or skills coach was on the ice, and since I wasn't there I will wait for the NHL to finalize their investigation.

So was it a practice or not? Were there coaches on the ice or not? Did the team provide staff to the players or did they show up on their own choice? Does Wyatt Johnston feel pressured to go to the rink when he plays 2 minutes more than any other forward on the team and is solidified on the roster or did he show up to hang out with Stankoven + others instead of sitting at home alone?
