So on your day off you can't go to the team facility by your own choice and hang out, go for a skate, and get a meal cooked by team chef?

North Korea I guess.

Yes, having contracts taken seriously is definitely North Korea. Hell, I think they should play Christmas games. I think they shouldn’t be allowed off the ice until they score 100 goals in a game. Force them to work or it’s communism.

Next year the boys will need to go to one of the other Stars Centers and have a free skate there without a skills coach and all will be well.

Why would it matter which one of their facilities it’s held at?

This is a very small fine anyway. Likely the stupidity does continue. Hopefully some of the players take offense to how the stars treat them.

They can't skate at the practice facility, which was in the NHL memo, so they need to go to another public rink and skate there. Guess they will need to pay the hourly fee as well.

If not any club facilities, or coaches,
and players organize and buy the ice time, then sure, ya that’s ok.

My money is on, they do what 31 other teams players did, and take the day off.

Right, and I'm saying it's still more of a nothingburger because, again, the players were under no obligation whatsoever to attend this optional skate. If they'd held a team meeting and then benched players for not attending, that's a different story but a random optional skate doesn't appear to make much of a difference.

But hey, rules is rules and Dallas's owner will cut a cheque. :dunno:
DeBoer said young players are expected to show up to these "optional" skates, so yes, there is an obligation. This is why the PA had to negotiate a hard rule because otherwise hard ass coaches would ruin the vacation time players want.

[mod] It puts players in a weird position where their commitment can unofficially be in question. If you have two young players, both trying to cement a permanent position on the team, player A comes to the optional skate and player B doesn’t, you really don’t see how B could on some level be thought less of? Whether the team acknowledges that officially or not is irrelevant.

It’s a stupid thing to do.

I refuse to believe any Stars players were "pressured" into doing anything during the break. :help:

They can, any player can, really, but the team just gets a tiny lil' slap on the wrist as a result, for daring to violate the CBA. :dunno:
DeBoer literally said he expected the young guys to be there.

I mean, WTF? Where’s the grey area here? These guys probably had to fly home Christmas night just to make it to this stupid thing.

Everything is dumber in Texas.

This was brought up yesterday and I'd still like to think his quote was taken out of context.

If it wasn't, then maybe PDB is trying to get himself fired and force Dallas's hand. Again though, I doubt it.

Yeah well I’d like to think all sorts of things about the world.

Even if he didn’t outright mean “these young guys better be there”, he’s still implying he’s expecting the young players to be there.

Explicit vs. Implicit

From what I can tell, you are actually excited over the idea of a team violating the CBA, so I find it hard to believe you want the quote to mean something other than an implied expectation of participation by some.

Well, again, if that's the case then maybe DeBoer is pushing the line to see what kind of reaction he gets. And yeah I don't think he meant it explicitly either, regarding the young guns.

Probably should've just kept his mouth shut, but oh well. Too late now lol

I wouldn't call it "excited" but I do find all the commotion rather amusing.

A simple optional skatearound during the holidays = "omg you guys, Dallas is violating the CBA, get 'em!"

I dunno, I just find it kinda funny.

People are mostly on break and have free time to involve themselves in nonsense like this. It's not that surprising.

That said, I think the thread has reached 8 pages because a number of stars fans appear to need the entire concept explained to them

This is exactly right and what I thought as well. It’s about the position it puts players in who opt not to attend when they shouldn’t have to worry about hockey at all during the break.

It’s definitely not the biggest deal in the world but the rule and fine are understandable.

You find it funny that people have a problem with a team violating a rule meant specifically to protect players' family time during a widely celebrated holiday. Sports may have influenced your perspective in some troubling ways. Players are human beings and deserve to have some stress-free time off, hence the rule. They aren't slaves performing for our entertainment.

But you've been told all of this and still think it's funny, so whatever. Hope you enjoy time with your family.
