Nashville signs Robert Scuderi

Nashville was given permission by Rob's agent to announce the signing as soon as it was possible to do so.

Associated Press:

The Predators have announced the signing of free agent defenseman Robert Scuderi. Scuderi was a vital contributor to Pittsburgh's recent Stanely Cup runs and is expected to be a major building block on the defensive zone for many years to come in Nashville. His experience and leadership will go a long way towards mentoring the youthful defensive corps of the Predators and he will be a nice replacement for Greg Zanon who parted ways with the organization this summer. Scuderi was signed to a five year deal worth $3,550,000 a year.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed unrestricted free agent right winger Mikael Samuelsson to a two year deal $5.5 million. The deal will count 2.75 towards the Bolts salary cap.

"Mikael has developed into a solid two way winger and has learned the game from some of the best players in the world in Detroit. Hes won a Stanley Cup and was consistently a 20+ goal scorer during his time in Detroit, while a lot of time only playing 3rd line minutes. He'll be playing on our 2nd line with fellow countryman Robert Nilsson and center Andy McDonald, a line that feel will be a very effective combination for us. We're happy Mikael decided to sign with us and we look forward to him helping us make the playoffs next season and beyond."

:coyotes VETERANS MARCHANT, GRIER BRING PREMIER PENALTY-KILL SKILLS TO PHOENIX:coyotes

MIKE GRIER

Former Anaheim veteran Center Todd Marchant and San Jose Winger Mike Grier are bringing their grit and toughness to Phoenix after signing 3-year and 2-year deals, respectively.

Marchant and Grier, two of the best penalty killers in the NHL, will join the rebuilt Coyotes who enter 2009 committed to get back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs after a 7-year absence. Marchant signed a 3-year deal worth a total of $9.5M ($3.167M per year), while Grier inked a 2-year deal that will pay him $1.75M per year.

The Coyotes are ecstatic to add Todd and Mike to our team. They bring leadership and their unique and keen ability to be at the right place on the ice at all times. We had a lot of needs coming into this off-season and we feel we've addressed them all. We got bigger, stronger and meaner on the blueline; built one of the best PK units in the league; will domiante in the faceoff circle; and brought guys in who can both put the puck in the net or hit the open man. We cannot wait for the season to start.

The adition of Marchant gives the Coyotes another two-way power forward known more for his defensive and PK skills. He's also a competent face-off guy, winning more than 50% of his draws last year.

Grier always brings excitement every time he steps on the ice. He's one of the best defensive forwards in the game who can bang bodies, is a fierce checker, and following his shifts opponents know he's been on the ice. He can also surprise with his offense. He put up 10-13-23 in 62 games for the San Jose Sharks last year.

:coyotes COYOTES ADD FACE-OFF BEAST MALHOTRA TO CENTER CORPS :coyotes

MannyMalhotra.jpg

Continuing its efforts to get back to the playoffs after a seven-year absence, the Phoenix Coyotes have added yet another key piece to its forward line, signing Center Manny Malhotra to a 4-year, $9M deal.

Malhotra, who finished 3nd to Carolina’s Rod Brind’Amour in face-off winning percentage among players winning 600 or more face-offs (with 58%), joins his former teammate Antoine Vermette down the middle of the Coyotes lines. Vermette was 4th overall in face-off winning percentage between Malhotra at 57.7%

“Adding Manny and Antoine, who with holdovers Matthew Lombardi and Martin Hanzal give the Coyotes the best center corps in the league that can dominate in the face-off circle, significantly improves our power play and penalty kill,†a Coyotes spokesman said. “We struggled mightily in both those area last year, and our inability to win face-offs played a big part. It’s hard to score on the PP when you can’t win enough face-offs in your zone, or kill penalties for the same reason.â€

Malhotra has brings a strong defensive game with him, another key piece the Coyotes sought this off-season. Hanzal has already started to establish himself as a top shutdown center, and Manny helps take some of that pressure off of Marty.

And the 40 points he’ll contribute on offense is an added bonus.

“We are absolutely thrilled to reunite Manny with Antoine and Kristian (Huselius). All got a taste of the playoffs last year and we expect that experience will rub off on our younger plyers.â€

The Isles have signed Mike Komisarek for 6 years worth $30M and a NMC. I would type out a big, fancy post now but I don't feel like it.
