Reliably poor in drafting,

Look at the top of their scouting staff.

Dennis Bonvie has been around since 2015.

Scott Bradley has been in scouting or other positions within the organization since 1993.

*1993.*
After reading that article I am losing all hope about this draft

saw him play a handful of times this season, very nice player but as you stated, a bit soft. Jackson Smith from Tri-City would be my presence if they were to pick D between the two of them

He looked really good in the U-18 coverage I saw.

7th OA picks last 14 years. Most are good to great. Anderson and Fluery are only “busts” imo. Jury still out on Holtz, who would be a good pickup this summer.
Interesting that Victor Eklund’s brother was taken at #7

Do you really think CHI wants to trade Lardis after he just popped 71 goals & 117 points this season in the OHL?
no, that was who I had before Boisvert and just didn’t delete his name. I don’t think they’d move him, but would happily add if it meant including him.

My concerns about O'Brien:

1) he was a -2 this season on a team that had many " plus" rated players.
2) his play in world juniors was not good, one point in 12 games.
3) he is not physically ready to play in the NHL yet, is around 20 pounds under weight / is at least one more year away.

What I like about him:
1) scored 98 points as a 17 YO, second to Misa.
2) was named OHL rookie of the year in 23/24

In all the mock drafts I looked at ( 10) he was a consistent 10 OA pick.

Probably because he seemed to do a lot of his damage on the PP (41 PP assists). On a team that was kind of stacked up front with talent.

ES O'Brien had 22 goals/25 assists in 66 games. Assuming my math is correct.

Stats don't tell the story, but that still concerns me a bit. Low volume shots on goal. High volume PP assists. Is he a play driver?

Warming up more to the idea of Brady Martin....

ES he put up 22 goals/30 assists in 57 games. 13 points on the PP. 7 on the PK. Seems like a good all around talent with some bite in his game.

Wanted to stay at 5, but 7 makes me look long at Brady Martin. His floor is a bigger Mike Peca and ceiling is very intriguing.

The beauty thing about a Brady Martin popping is that then you automatically have grit in your top 6 for the length of his career. If he can become a Mike Richard's (minus the blow) then you have a skilled champion to go to war with.
If his floor was Peca he would be top 5 easy imo.

In the games I watched him (on TV), he played with good players on the PP but it all went through him and he was the one making it go. His vision, passing, and how quick he reads the play are ridiculous. I understand he's younger and not as physically developed as others, he's really light for his height, and his skating mechanics aren't that great, so he doesn't have a way to get separation at even strength.

You could look at how his points are weighted towards the PP as a negative, but I look at how much more he did on the PP than anyone else in his draft class as a sign of what a playmaker he is and the growth he could have once he adds weight. 41 PP assists, I think the next guy was Misa in the low 20s.

What did you think of his skating? I thought he had some weird hitch in his stride. Dom said he's talked to a skating coach about the kid's skating and there's nothing to worry about, so I'm curious what others see.

Its kind of funny that we joke about Sweeney reaching on guys.....and then I see people suggest a guy at #7 who is ranked as high as #11 and as low as #56 and his projected upside is a middle-6 forward.

You remember on looney tunes where the feet are moving a million miles an hour but they never go anywhere? That's his stride. It should get better as long as he doesn't skip leg day.

I am on board with Ecklund or Mrtka. Stay away from McQueen and probably O'Brien. I think someone will reach slightly for Mrtka, which is bad. They need everything and should not draft for need.
McQueen scares me BIG TIME.
If his skating was more advanced, he would be a top 3 pick, but he is slow, needs a ton of work.
The history of back issues is also a concern for me and he is probably a year behind most players that will be picked in the top 10 due his lack of games played (70 games in the last two years)
At a PPG average, he is not lighting it up.
Having said that, his size is what will intrigue scouts, thinking he may turn into a nice power forward.
Lots of risk.
I am not sold on O'Brien either, take a less risky pick with Eklund.
IMO if Eklund weighs in at the combine at 170-175 lbs and scores well on the tests, I can see him being picked at 5-6.

Probably so, but neither he nor Frondell performed well at the WJC. Some scouts put too much weight on that in both directions.

Fair enough. I’ve never watched a draft lottery in any sport before, so this is new to me.

I will say that I appreciate the transparency on the NHL’s part by having the drawing in “public view.” If Pittsburgh or had Chicago won in a private sealed room, many would have thought the lottery was a bag-job. The NHL has enough credibility issues as it is.
That is what the best "sleight of hand" magicians do. Make you think that you're seeing something on the up & up but really the screw job was in effect.
All of those empty suits to show how "legit" the process was, is a sign that the "fix was in."
They couldn't just leave it the way it naturally should've been. Maybe drop the first 2 teams who lucked
out the last 3 years down 2 picks and let the rest stand. But no, the NHLoL in their wisdom finds
a way to screw certain teams. Utah moving up was a telltale sign of a screw job. Nice.
