NHL Demonetizing Youtube Channels

I suspect regardless of who was in charge the past 30 you would say the same thing. 😏

I don't think I've ever heard of a single commissioner in any sport who was highly regarded or even partially regarded by fans.

It's like being a referee or umpire- you're just going to be hated no matter what you do

No
It’s the term
You need a new voice and new ideas

Clarence Campbell was even longer- and a bigger douche

The owners like and want who they like and want; as long as thr revenues keep going up...

Nope Bettman is longer
companies dont have CEO's this long for a reason

other sports leagues have grown quicker than thew NHL

Growth has as much to do with media coverage as anything. Can’t force ESPN to talk about hockey, and unfortunately it’s still the best option in the states. I know everyone hates Bettman. But the game is in a much better place than it was. It’s not even close. It used to be on Versus. Cap is going up, talent is abundant, I think hockey is doing pretty well… so I guess I don’t think Bettman is the devil that many do. I definitely disagree with many things he’s done (this topic being one of the many issues I have with how the NHL goes about things). But he’s been excellent for the league from a business perspective.

meanwhile you have the NBA and NFL looking at the NHL after the overwhelming success of Four Nations and how they could improve their ASG experiences

Ironically the only legitimate hockey media is on YouTube. Because the clown show between periods is like watching Pat McAfee lite. And that’s about all I get here in the states.

If they ever touch The Hockey Guy, I’ll boycott the sport entirely.
What does the hockey guy even say that has substance? I’m sorry, but he is one of the worst out there for actual analysis. I expect more than just a regurgitation of the play by play.

It doesnt have to be is he the devil or not

you need a new voice...... plain and simple
30+ years is ridiculous

I remember one time he finished off a "Buffalo situation video" by basically saying

"It's not the owner's fault or the coachs fault or the players fault" I was like "wtfs fault is it then?"

Good info, but the driest most milquetoast takes, not to say everybody needs to be a hot take merchant, but he's like a cold take merchant no strong stances on anything.

That falls pretty firmly under fair use,
Not necessarily.

There's many channels just uploading highlights without transforming it into original content with a voice over or flipping the screen backwards, etc.

But, teams in general are probably the ones forcing this issue and of course the nhl has their own channel I'm sure they don't want to share ad revenue with small channels.

But, if you have a marketing agency behind you nothing will happen to you. Just saying.

Then YouTube wonders why they're getting eaten alive by TiTikTok.
Low attention spans are killing youtube and ad revenue.

You can make alot of money on youtube, but you can also make a grand for a million views on tiktok by taking a selfie or stealing copyrighted material and have AI build it then upload it for you.

Less work with a similar financial end goal? Sign me up.....

I think people don't realize how much of a mom and pop-like operation the NHL was fir decades.

Norris owned 3 of the 6 teams in the O6 era- he even got an expansion team put in St.Louus- with no bidders!- because he wanted to use load his arena.

Sam Pollock managed to manipulate Campbell to suit expansion drafts to his benefit

Wirtz and Jacobs were Ziegler's puppetmasters

This is a league that refused to pay for Gretzky's way to LA to get on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson

Yeah, it's really bizarre why you can't make money by taking something someone else owns the rights to and then trying to make money "reacting" to it. Really weird. :sarcasm:

If they actually do want to grow the game as they claim they do youtube and tiktok are the best platforms to do so. The positives in allowing these youtubers to react to the highlights of the games are worth way more than the negatives of whatever loss in revenue they take.

I hate this because it's always awesome to see a fan's POV and without commentary. I wish there was a mute the commentators option. That's why I can't get rid of season tickets because I hate commentators so much, it's so much more fun to hear the fans and how quiet the rink is before a goal.

Don't worry the NBA continue letting people use game play for there content so it's entertaining which brings eyes to NBA games.

I have found myself watching more and more basketball since the content is just straight up better

I think he's a guy who really can't stand someone not liking him or pointing out him being wrong, so he takes the middle of the road of every road, even all at once.

I remember him being really upset about people pointing out where he was wrong in his Stanley cup predictions and just stopped doing them after that (I don't know if he has started doing then again, I stopped watching him after that).
If he can't even take criticism or jokes about evidently difficult predictions, then I don't think he has the stamina to openly have strong opinions on anything which even moderately goes against the mainstream.

It's amazing how myopic the NHL can be. Why would they go out of their way to demonetize relatively small YouTube channels that generate interest in the league, especially for the casual fans they should be courting.

Eck mentions that Hockey Psychology and Next Man Up have received similar treatment.

The NHL's legal case - copyright violation versus "fair use" - might be technically sound, but its actions are ultimately self-defeating.

For example Hockey psychology has been miles better than anything the NHL itself produces.

To me it's amazing how these greedy suits don't understand the appeal of free marketing, where the community itself starts building around the game.

But just reinforces my thought of that these Bettmans don't watch anything related to hockey other than their own boring talks, and look at their Excel sheets.

Dude we know how to mute commentators, you should find that thread.

Ya know this guy has 99% positive comments on every single video, but it's not good enough. Shannon demands that 100% of people like him which is why he takes the time to argue with trolls over nothing. Very manipulative and sneaky man.

Anyone can freely react to whatever they want. Monetizing it for themselves is another thing. No, no one is going to allow reactors to make thousands of dollars out of stuff they have no ownership over.

This ain't rocket surgery.

It's not just the NHL. The movie business and music business also do not allow reactors to make big Youtube money just by taking something someone else made and reacting to it.

They've always been bullies. Way back in the day, me and a buddy ran a hockey trade rumors website. We even had live draft coverage before podcasts were a thing, pre-Youtube days. We were getting about 17,000 unique visitors a day at the peak and the NHL sent a cease and desist letter from their lawyers because we were using their name on the site and as a part of the domain. We did have a banner with the Canadian teams logos as well which we offered to remove but they said no, you must cease operations and let the domain expire which they immediately bought.
