NHL Demonetizing YouTube Channels

Legally they might be in the right but it's still incredibly stupid from business perspective. I mean they literally pay people to make content for them (most of which gets zero views) and they were getting these for free.
Yes, but all the NHL views are DEI and PC-approved (everything to make everyone into a unicorn). We love these blokes because they say bad stuff or negative stuff all the time and the NHL can't have that. Nonetheless, every major sport does the same stuff (that is, PC-approved unicorn talk).

I was already shunning the official NHL channel cuz you can't watch highlights without being blitzed with 1 minute of ads for every 2 minutes of highlights, which you can't go back/forth to lower ad time like most channels. I have to do that 20 times to getthe 20 seconds ads.

This news just reinforces my resolve.
Watch them on Sportsnet, they have decent highlights

I get the annoyance about demonetization on YouTube but can we have an NHL without giant media companies stumping up huge figures for rights to broadcast the footage? Even if this isn't such an instance there will come a time when Rogers, ESPN, or whoever decides the little guy on YouTube with the loosely narrated highlights channel is simply ripping them off too much to ignore. I don't think that's as l unreasonable as a lot of people make out.
Also I do think we have it better than ever now in terms of free access to curated highlight footage through official YouTube channels (even if they have tons of room for improvement).
With all that said, big appreciation for channels like Jens95 that show the stuff that doesn't make it into league approved highlight packages.

Aaah ok. But my problem are the ads. Does the SN channel flood you with ads?
No, switch to them. It might be IP address dependant(?) but I don't get any ads load on the Sportsnet YouTube highlights and I watch them all the time. Sadly capped to 720p and occasionally the editing is inexplicably bad but they do show a bit more rough stuff than the NHL channels which makes them better to start with anyway.

Darn, I hope they don’t take down my favorite videos like, “THIS is Getting Embarrassing”, “THIS Team is Pathetic”, “Someone Should be Fired for THIS”, “THIS is Absolutely Terrible”, “THIS Call was Total BS” etc.

It's amazing how myopic the NHL can be. Why would they go out of their way to demonetize relatively small YouTube channels that generate interest in the league, especially for the casual fans they should be courting.

Eck mentions that Hockey Psychology and Next Man Up have received similar treatment.

The NHL's legal case - copyright violation versus "fair use" - might be technically sound, but its actions are ultimately self-defeating.

Glad you brought this up! I was going to do the same. The fact that this is being done manually is my biggest concern. How out of touch do you have to be to do this? These YouTubers love the game and are adding a much needed element that’s missing from the NHL’s content sphere.

The NHL doesn't like being upstaged.

Unless it's by the NFL, the MLB, the NBA, the WNBA, NASCAR, Golf, MLS, Darts, Bowling, Competitive Eating, Sleep marathons...
