NHL Demonetizing YouTube Channels

I always thought the NHL were lenient with YT and IG channels because it was free advertising.

They must be losing money that way (idk how though), otherwise why would they be against these channels? Highly doubt it's just ego.

They look at the money all of these channels are getting as lost revenue.

Man the NHL just can't avoid actively shooting itself in the foot when it comes to marketing this league.

YT channels are good for the sport. It's free advertising, and gets more people to turn into games. Even if this was an accident, the setting to enable it shouldn't have even been remotely accessible

Ive heard many say that this is ayoutube problem, it somehow takes time before the higher resolutions start showing, that what many comments have said, i dont have a legit source.

No I mean on the gamecenter of scores on NHL.com, and I think the other poster too. The rate is ok on YT and videos are at least 1080p. The problem on YT are the incessant ads.

I'd have more sympathy for those so called "content creators" if they didn't whine on such a high level.
"I put so much work into it, it's my only source of income".

The ones who are getting hit the hardest are literally those whose content relies on videos they simply don't own.

The Hockey Guy will be 100% fine.
Those other ones who just use the NHL's footage will have to figure out something else.

People who say "they should find a different job" are missing the point. I doubt Youtubers are doing this for the money. It's clearly being done for the love of the game and to provide others with important archival information.

The NHL is not doing this! Where is the NHL's own archival Youtube channel? Oh, that's right, they don't have one.

Remember when the NBA went through a period of taking down every single set of game highlights on Youtube? Well, they got wise and hired people to do the work themselves.

The NHL is the one who comes off as whiny in this instance, unless they are literally watching full games who cares about using some 10-15 second clip?

Then again the NHL are the same greedy scumbags who sold the league out already entirely to endless ads and endless gambling promotion, so it's on brand for them.

Can't have the multi billion dollar league losing $20 of ad revenue per month because of the people who will now watch their official highlights as opposed to some youtuber.

I think the NHL should back off a tad, but in reality, they are the ones right in this. People are trying to make money off their product, that's pretty much what it is.

And for the record, I love both Eck, UT, and Hockey Psych. All their weekly NHL videos are much better than whatever the NHL puts out, for sure. They're all good, but they're still trying to make money off a product that is not their own. It's like the people who do reaction videos to other videos. The original video took so much time to make and create, yet all somebody needs to do is make a reaction to it and make money off of that.

American law recognizes the right to "fair use" of material protected under copyright. Afaik the YouTubers in question publish fairly short clips of NHL play, presumably within the boundaries of fair use, although that would be decided by a court of law.

The legal details are hardly relevant though.

Hockey is a niche sport. The league should welcome all the positive free attention it can get. They're missing a prime opportunity to publicize its product, and to generate some good will, by harassing these guys instead of encouraging them.

It's incredibly obtuse.
