It's amazing how myopic the NHL can be. Why would they go out of their way to demonetize relatively small YouTube channels that generate interest in the league, especially for the casual fans they should be courting.

Eck mentions that Hockey Psychology and Next Man Up have received similar treatment.

The NHL's legal case - copyright violation versus "fair use" - might be technically sound, but its actions are ultimately self-defeating.

I always thought the NHL were lenient with YT and IG channels because it was free advertising.

They must be losing money that way (idk how though), otherwise why would they be against these channels? Highly doubt it's just ego.

My guess is that their advertising /engagement metrics have been diminishing, and that brings in less advertising & marketing dollars when they try to sell to potential sponsors about how many eyeballs are actually on their videos and website.

I did see an announcement that this was a mistake.

It's about to be a big mistake if they don't actually reverse course on this... a sport like the NHL with all its myriad challenges needs as much engagement, grassroots especially, to find new audiences who are already entrenched (often generational, e.g. father and son) in their local sports offerings.

“We’re not evil, just really incompetent. Also sometimes evil until the PR looks bad, then we claim incompetence. Look, it’s tough pretending we actually do anything, here. What, you want us to just not f*** things up? How would you know we’re here, then?”

YouTube is very much a world where the rich get richer and the small man gets shit on. They, and the big corporations, have ultimate authority to just arbitrarily throw copyright claims at small channels as a way of killing them by attrition.

30 franking years this idiot has been in charge

Way too long

The dude's far from perfect but he's made a lot of money for the team owners.

Then YouTube wonders why they're getting eaten alive by TikTok.
