Nhl.com writers vote Mackinnon mvp for the 2nd straight year

I'm a MacKinnon fan, but he does seem to get the sort of love from the media that guys who are good two-way players or "heart-and-soul warriors" get.

Not saying he's bad defensively, but he's primarily an offensive C and he plays with an elite offensive defenseman in Makar. Guys like that usually (always?) don't win the Hart multiple times unless they lead the League in points in at least one Hart season. It's hard to imagine him winning it two years in a row without leading the NHL in scoring or being near the top in goals or Selke voting in either year.

MacKinnon finished runner up for the Hart trophy in 2018 while Makar was still in short pants.

5th in scoring while missing the most games of any of the top 5.

He's great all on his own.

Also theres a reason why the Art Ross is a separate trophy than the Hart or Lindsay.

Messier won the Hart twice while coming nowhere near the Ross. And he deserved it both times.

Same with Hall in 2018.

Hart voters do love the guy.

Assuming he finishes top three this year, he'll have finishes of 1, 2, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 1, 2 or 3 this year.

That's a better Hart record than guys like Trottier, Bossy, Sakic, Yzerman, Forsberg.

Even Ovechkin only has five top three Hart placements.
Most years as a Hart trophy finalist (1947 to 2025)

The table assumes MacKinnon will be a finalist this year. It moves him into seriously impressive company - he'll be tied with Hasek, Ovechkin, Esposito, and Richard.

Quotes from voters who see the big picture and not just stat watch. Everyone here is drastically underestimating the adversity the Avalanche went through this season with goaltending issues and turnover.

MacKinnon has repeatedly said the only trophy he cares about is the Stanley Cup.

He said that before winning it in 2022, and certainly after he won the Hart Trophy voted as the League's most valuable player last season, more than a month after a six-game loss to the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Second Round.

"I argued 'Kuch' (for the Hart Trophy) last year and thought he got a raw deal," NHL Network analyst and retired forward Brian Boyle said. "I'd argue MacKinnon this year. People see Colorado and think it's some super team. It wasn't. Their start was horrific, but when he's on, he can't be stopped."

If they have to snub Kucherov then they gotta go the goalie hart route. MacKinnon again would just be a bad choice. He doesn’t lead the league in goals, he doesn’t compete for Selkes, there isn’t a really solid foundation to give him the award back to back years.
Not to mention he gets to play with arguably the best (at worst top 2) d man lol

I'm not sure if Nate wins this, as they are all deservig, but I hope he does. If not him, then Hellebuyck. The Avs have iced 49 players this season...50 if Gabe returns. That's crazy! Nate is the most valuable to his team as he had the enormous responsibility of an ever changing forward core. So many injuries, unknowns, different linemates, a massive team overhaul including losing his longtime winger. He took on leadership in every aspect of the game in the absence of Landy while leading the league in points for most of the season against other teams top talent. He's a top line Center, a workhorse, and a winner. I can see it all things considered. Best of luck to all!

To be honest, there isn't really an obvious winner this year.

MacKinnon started off on fire but slowed down somewhat. He wasn't as good as he was last year and it seems many think Makar was more valuable to the Avalanche than MacKinnon this season.

Last season, people used Kucherov's empty net points against him and people thought MacKinnon drove play better. This season, MacKinnon has a lot of EN points and more than Kucherov. I don't see the argument for him over NK86 this year. But Kucherov's season hasn't really "felt" like a Hart season, either (maybe it kind of flew under the radar until he got hot late in the season and was suddenly first in scoring).

I don't think you can give it to Draisaitl with all those missed games. For the most part, he was better than McDavid this season, but McDavid did end up matching him in points per game and had almost as many points.

I might go with Hellebuyck this year.
Kuch wasn’t even in the conversation till two weeks to go in the season. lol!
