Statistically the last 3 seasons he is right there. Depending on when the selection process is a good start to this season may do it.
92 goals 106 assists in 201 Leaf games is elite production from the centre position.
scoring is up and avg roughly a ppg isn't elite also the selection committee couldn't care less what a player did 3 seasons ago and will not be using it when they evaluate players

as i said earlier , even at his peak JT was used as depth winger playing sheltered limited mins so now with his regression i have no idea why people believe he'll be selected

i'm sure Shanny/Dubas will be trying there best to get him on the team considering how poorly it will look if their 11M prize acquisition is left off but i doubt they'll have much luck convincing the selection committee

Marner/Matthews are locks, likely Nylander too. I'd be surprised if Reilly doesn't make it but for me, he's at best the 7th D.

Tavares is far from it, given the incredible depth at forward Canada has and as a slower, primarily offensive C there's at least 4-5 players I'd take over him. I posted my roster elsewhere here and he wasn't even an alternate; Not a Johnny T hater I just see too many that bring more than he will to an international tournament.

Provided his health is not an issue, Tavares is still in the mix as he's not exactly a defensive liability and is a top ten in the NHL faceoff guy. His hot end to the season was also good for his chances.

He's one of the guys who's play immediately preceding the selection process will have a huge impact on whether or not he makes the team.

yeah there are a couple of the top-15 producers who are liabilities defensively, but Tavares ain't one of them. Their names are Stamkos and Scheifele and those 2 would be the ones I drop from that top 15 up there.

the lines from 2016 were iirc:

Marchand - Crosby - Bergeron
Tavares - Getzlaf - Stamkos
Couture - Toews - Perry
Thornton - O'Reilly - Duchene
(Giroux/Seguin)

and I'm pretty sure that 1st and 2nd line was together right from the pre-tournament games, while the bottom two lines were a bit more in flux.

I have no love for Scheifele but Stamkos is still a capable trigger man on the PP. While Tavares has improved defensively, there are better defensive centers and better offensive ones (better at both too). And playing a slow natural C on the wing in the Olympics makes zero sense.

Don't see him making it until he really impresses early on this season.

These lines with the previous 2 seasons PPG at that time:

Marchand (28) 0.67 --- Crosby (29) 1.08 --- Bergeron (31) 0.76
Tavares (26) 0.98 --- Getzlaf (31) 0.86 --- Stamkos (26) 0.86
Couture (27) 0.77 --- Toews (28) 0.77 --- Perry (31) 0.79
Thornton (37) 0.92 - O'Reilly (25) 0.75 --- Duchene (26) 0.72
Seguin (25) 1.05 -- Giroux (29) 0.88

don't think Team Canada needs to bring any PP specialists.

You can list his line as the first line and it woukdnt change the fact he got minimal sheltered mins .

Other than the fact that you're lying, of course.
Then prove me wrong and provide a link showing the forwards by mins played and I’ll gladly admit I was wrong .

and you can toss in the zone starts as well

IMO Matthews and Nylander are locks while Marner/Tavares/Rielly are maybes.

If either of you could find a decent site with good info on the 2016 world cup, please post it as there isnt much information on the tournament out there for some reason.

As far as Tavares goes, all I know is he played on the second line (Tavares/Getzlaf/Stamkos), was a net front fixture on the PP (watching highlights), had 4 points in 6 games (5th on the team) and finished +2.

Just guessing but I dont think he was one of the more sheltered players though. If that line were a sheltered line, why would would they keep getting thrown out as the second line by officials/press?

Heh. That's not how it works - you make a claim, you support it.

There's lots of support for what the lines were. Starting from the first practice (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.3748847) where we see the Crosby and Tavares lines intact from day 1 of camp, with the other two in Flux (Seguin ended up replaced by Perry on the Toews line, Girona was replaced by O'Reilly on the 4th line). Right through mid tournament where the 2nd line was listed as such (#WCH2016: Team Canada vs Team Russia lines, schedule and how to watch) or (https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/839358449285077776/) right to the final (WCH2016 Final Game One: Canada vs Europe game thread, schedule, lines, and how to watch) though they were wrong group didn't play that game.

On top of that, we can add in how silly it is to think that Babcock would shelter Tavares and Getzlaf, especially since the next year he turned Tavares into his extreme tough usage matchup center on the leafs.

You call someone a liar then it’s up too you to prove it and for someone who lives to post stats you should be thrilled with the opportunity to post the stats to back up your claim .

Is it really a good thing for our guys playing in the Olympics instead of having a two weeks off and rest? Esp since Team Canada is expected to play in the Finals.
Just curious what you guys think.

no, you make a dishonest claim and it's up to you to back it up.

I have shared the clear evidence that he wasn't sheltered, and pointed the obvious stupidity of the claim on its face.

it's up to you to back up your claim with even a shred of evidence, my friend.

Damien Cox, in an article in Saturday's Star, says "Canada will go in as the favourite, with the U.S., Sweden and Russia following in some order. It's possible the plucky Finns will knock off one of the big boys." (Italics mine)

Guess he hasn't watched any international games in a long time.

Good for a laugh, if nothing else.
