Jones is our 1st or 2nd best defenseman eating 25 minutes a game on a tanking team keeping the pressure off of the younger guys coming in.

Its an important role. His cap hit has not hurt us one bit and may not at all.

Lets hope at some point we have enough players that are going to make decent money we have to spend an asset to move him.

You guys are acting like he’s Seabrook 2.0 out there. His cap it his high but what we gave up for him ended up being next to nothing, as are most picks and prospects. We got a 45pt, 25 minute a night, top 4 Dman. We got by far the best player in the deal and we don’t have to give top pairing minutes to our young D.

Let the hate go FFS

Also, totally unrelated to my opinion of him…I met him last week. I was backing my baby out in the stroller leaving Ace Hardware and he held the door open for me. I said “hey thanks Seth Jones!”, he said “get the f*** out of my way you loser”…kidding. He said “Anytime man!”

You wont find a team out there that would trade the picks Columbus got for Jiricek, in a deal for Jones. So if what we gave up to him is for next to nothing, his value is below next to nothing.

Only because of his cap hit, which is completely irrelevant to us for at least 3 more seasons. People are talking about Murphy getting a 1st at the deadline. Jones is better.

I get why you hate the trade and signing but stop acting like Jones is some Nurse-level plug we wasted all these assets on.

But we did waste assets on him. Those assets could have been used to get a younger player who fits our timeline better, but our stupid GM (at the time) thought we could retool at the end of Toews and Kanes career.

And I don't think I've ever said he is a Nurse-level plug. But he is worth nothing on the trade market, and I'd much rather have the picks and Sillinger than him.

Also, lol, there's no way Murphy is getting a 1st. Be lucky to even get a 2nd for him.

To what end? What's the plan behind it?

To get out of his contract before he falls off a cliff. I think he will have a Seabrook like decline when it starts and better to get out of his contract if by some chance someone would take him now.

He's now in his 30s, seems injuries have been an issue the last 2-3 years now for him, and he has 5 more seasons under contract after this one. He missed 15 games last year, 10 the year before, 7 this year and at least handful more to come.

Not to mention he plays really poorly with Bedard. There are so many times he should have given up the puck to him, especially on the PP, and he blasts a poorly placed shot into shinpads. It's like he hasn't accepted there is a more important player on the ice who should have the puck over him, and it's infuriating.

The cap hit he takes up could be better utilized towards his replacement and the leftover towards some help in the middle 6 with the forwards.

Jones money doesnt matter and if we were getting rid of Jones you would be looking for a veteran RD to play in front of Levshunov and Rinzel for 3 years anyway. Hes a perfect fit for this team for the next 3 years.

Once it matters he wont be on the powerplay.

And @Hawkaholic, Who fills in for his heavy minutes? Another Martinez/Brodie type? Do we toss EDM, Rinzel, Kaiser, Allan, Levehunov, etc…to the wolves with no vets to play with?

He’s underperforming relative to his cap hit but he’s a net positive on the roster, even if only slightly.

Go sign Pionk after this year. Plays the right side and is logging 20+ minutes a night on the second-best team in the league right now. Reliable and hasn't missed a game since 2021-22 and still played 77 games that season. PKs and ideally there is no need for him to log PP time but can in a pinch.

i'd move jones for anything other than giving him away or paying for a cap dump. the contract doesn't hurt until it does. there is no cap climate where 9.5 makes sense for seth jones on a winning team, and if he starts to decline in hid mid 30's then he won't be worth that number for any team whatsoever. it's certainly far from the biggest problem facing the team though, and like i said i wouldn't give him away or pay to send him packing.

Projecting out 5 years is tough in sports but for argument’s sake It’s looking like we’ll still be a gutter team next season as well. Most likely the 2026/27 season too but maybe we start to creep up and draft in the top 10 range. I would hope by 2027/28 we’re at least a bubble team. Hopefully in 2028/29 we’re a playoff team on the rise and if these health concerns are real then I’m sure Jones will be on LTIR that season and the 2029/30 season too.

I don’t see when his cap hit will hurt us considering we’re likely not contending for a Cup 3-4 seasons.

Jones is a better player then Pionk. The Blackhawks are not cap strapped and wont be for a while. The cap is going up again and again.

Bertuzzi 5.5
Tuevo 5.4
Jones 9.5
Vlasic 4.6
Bedard ?

These are the only contracts on the books after 2 more years. We do not need cap space. By the time we do we can send him to a tank team just like Boston did with Hall or Vancouver did with Mikheyev.

Spurgeon is 35, Doughty 34, Pietrangelo 34, Carlson 39, Petry 36, Tanev 34 etc. Jones can still be a quality player that a team would need by the end of his contract.

I didn't say Pionk is a better player, but down the road he could be better value and come with less term.

It's debatable if he's worth a 9.5M hit currently, and that's not likely to sway on the positive side of things during his age 31-36 seasons.

You sign someone who can eat mins. You dont need to pay someone 9,5mil to eat mins.
