Lots going around the league. Eh

Is this formal enough for you, old bean?
Yep, not much happening in the NHL in late August. The women have the spotlight... Go Canada!

This forum in particular seems to randomly have the most nit-picky, dig in your heels arguing over semantics back & forths that last for several pages and by the end of it I forget what the original statement was that started the whole ordeal. It carries over to Bears talk, White Sox talk, Bulls...it's not just the polarizing social stuff that you would expect. That 13th forward in the press box, the 12th guy at the end of the bench, the pinch hitter in the 6th inning. Neither side of the argument is ever totally wrong, yet holy hell do they need to be proven right at all costs.
These debates invariably come down to one side arguing for the one std within a normal distribution (i.e. 68% of the pop) and the other person arguing about that 32% outside that one std. They'll never agree.

So..... Uh. After the offseason they've had, do you think Calgary will be better or worse than last year?
Speaking only of next season, I think they'll be better. Upgraded the d. Downgraded at forward, but I think the net result will be better. And I think given two stars left them scrambling, they recovered well.

Yeah, that is a deal that could prove a detriment

I liked Thompson last year but still before that he was struggling player on all levels. Giving him that contract based on a single year is very risky

West is wide open, and the Flames should be up there

IMO they are slightly better team not worse after offseason moves
I agree, I think Calgary will be better with the new players. Maybe not long term seeing as they got a little older but again Tkachuk had yet to show he could perform in the PO's so his youth was wasted .. at least so far.

It'll be interesting to see what Matthew adds to the Panthers and what the Panthers look like without Huberdeau.

I guess these types of signings are pretty low risk cap wise considering you can easily buyout a younger player from a contract like this. Makes sense to go this route to me. Hope to see the hawks take advantage someday instead of what they did with toews and seabrook.

That Stutzle contract is gonna look great a few years from now.
I disagree.

What if the Sens finally make it to the playoffs and he's a playoff choker?

What if his career tapers off like Galchenyuk?

What if he stays a 60 point player his whole career?

Best case scenario he turns into a player that is worth exactly what he's being paid. In which case, they should wait for him to prove it and give him the same amount of money then.

I don't see a world where he outperforms that deal and it becomes a steal.

It'll either be fair, or an overpayment. Neither situation is a win.

What if the cap goes up like 10 mil over the next 4 seasons and he continues his trajectory?

Gally is an awful comp. Stutzle is a far more talented player. The Sens are paying the kid for his prime years. Will he even be thirty when he's getting his next deal?

Cap is gonna go up. People used to think Drai was expensive. Low key one of the best deals in hockey.

It's a gamble as any 8 yr contract is but given the situation I think it's a good gamble.
The Sens are setting up to be a potential contender for years to come.
Cat may decide to stay in Ottawa .. can't see any other team he can come in with the core they're acquiring and do any better.
We can only hope we're in the same situation in 3 to 5 years.
But hey we won 3 cups so I'm not complaining.
