NHL and Rogers in agreement on new Canadian TV deal, 12 years worth $11 billion CAD

Wasn't this obvious? Like, who could have put up a competitive bid against that?

It was `100% obvious, I don't know why people are surprised.

The NHL could care less if fans hate the presentation of their product. Their goal is to make money so the rights go to the highest bidder. Given Canada has a media duopoly, it was either Rogers or Bell and the latter is in bad shape financially. Plus the incumbent is usually favored in situations like this.

12 years, $5.2 billion
Wow, so it's more than doubled. Each Canadian team has another $80 million CDN in yearly revenue. Or about $56 mil US.

I imagine this will increase the cap for 2026-7 a good amount. And make Canadian teams quite a bit more profitable.

Hopefully, this gets the NHL to finally consider Quebec for expansion. And Toronto 2, IMO best located in Mississauga off the 403.

Conner Mcdavid will be smiling today. He’s almost due for a big raise.

Isn't that how all TV deals technically work?

Sure. Other programming just doesn’t have the perceived localized impact like pro sports. Past reaction has focused on what it does for my team’s cap.

These Telcos and streaming providers are consumer representatives in a roundabout way. We should be asking what the justification for rights to increase like this?

Always funny that TSN took "The Hockey Theme" away from Rogers, so Rogers took hockey away from TSN.

Anyways, I mostly tune out all things not game related. Death to regional broadcasting.

Some of the replies are kind of funny. The caliber of SportsNet's coverage is irrelevant to the NHL, and there isn't any *giving* the rights to TSN or the CBC. This was a bidding process, not an audition.

Rogers thinks it can make money off the NHL, either with its own broadcasts, branching out into other terrestrial radio and online media types, and/or selling some of those rights to other entities. So it bid a higher number than anyone else. The NHL likes money. If Bell had wanted to bid more, the NHL would have liked TSN too (or instead). Same with Amazon (though I suspect they'll get some of the rights via Rogers, in the end).

Growth is literally Gary's job, and so this is a home run for Bettman. It'll be the last substantive achievement he racks up before his retirement in the next couple of years. Then we'll have 20 years of Bill Daly doing the same.

It’s comical to see people reacting like it’s a life altering event for Sportsnet to have the NHL rights.

Almost as bad as the hf boards media experts who insisted Rogers was going to lose a ton of money on their last contract of $5B.
