NHL and Rogers in agreement on new 12 year, $11 billion CAD Canadian TV deal

Rogers/SportsNet is trying to suffocate TSN to oblivion. NHL national rights, all 162 Blue Jay games -- that alone covers an entire year of broadcasting coverage.

I'm actually impressed that TSN has held on for so long. NFL/CFL, tennis, curling, lacrosse, gold, World Juniors. All respectable fillers, but still nowhere near what SportsNet offers.

Jays are nothing more than filler these days for Sportsnet, thanks to the Rogers Family ownership.

NHL coverage has been a joke for 10 years and we now can expect the same joke but at more cost.

I enjoy watching them lose but there is no question the Jays are a national team, something the Raptors haven't been able to achieve

Anecdotal but when Toronto plays in Seattle, Jays fans routinely fill-up T-Mobile Park. Last Jays at Mariners game I was at was last season and family sitting in front of me had traveled from Calgary. Two guys sitting behind me had traveled down from Vancouver. Was nice they were also Flames & Canucks fans, respectively. Got to talk a lot hockey with them during the massive amount of downtime that comes with being at a baseball game.

Friedman talks about new deal. One novel news tidbit is that the exclusive negotiating window was extended (without any public notice).

This reinforces my theory on what happened.

Gary had a number in mind along with the term. Rogers didn't laugh at it and they banged out a deal.

TSN ( which ESPN owns the maximum foreign stake allowed by Canadian regulators ) could build a streaming network based on ESPN+.

Bettman despises Rick Westhead over his concussion coverage, and he knows Rogers will not go out of its way to make the NHL look bad. Bettman may have been willing to leave a billion or more off the table by slamming the door on Bell.

Bell could very well wind up with the French contract as there is doubt that TVAS will even exist after next season.

I wrongly assumed the NHL would at least look at what Bell was willing to do. I never expected the term would be 12 years.

TSN currently has 5 channels available for streaming, which coincides with the 5 channels they have for “cable”.

I think we are headed to a 36 team league and possibly 2 more teams in Canada ( Toronto II and Quebec ) along with Houston and Atlanta.
I don't see them getting to 36 and not returning to Arizona. It's there, Houston, Atlanta, and 1 wild card. And it's probably not Quebec.

Maybe to get content for streaming as cable disappears. That is probably their play.

Expansion makes no sense now for Canada with the TV package already signed. Expansion will only happen if there is risk of the new deal being lower. NHL will use expansion to only drive up the price which wouldn't make sense now since only Rodgers would gain from it. If you wait till the next deal and do it then, NHL could also benefit with a much larger TV deal.

Sports are the only thing keeping cable channels alive plus you need content if you are making a jump to streaming.

It makes me wonder how long it will be before Bell decides to put some of their sports content exclusively on Crave.

And now Rogers is primed to lock in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for 14 years at $500 000. Seems like a neat co-incidence that Guerrero's contract and the NHL contract will expire around the same time.
