NHL and Rogers in agreement on new 12 year, $11 billion CAD Canadian TV deal

So they would outbid Amazon just to sublicense for what they would’ve paid?

Thought they were taking a haircut on the current deal

I guess as others say they'll have to sell off parts to other providers. Last deal included a sub licence to TVA for the French rights..I presume the same applies here

CBC is still technically a minor partner via HNIC.

It's just Rogers handles the production, CBC really can't afford to put on something like a live hockey event.

I dunno, they have sports including the Olympics.

I have to think they could do a minor package

Canadian media should have played hardball and forced the league to adopt this alignment in order to stay on national TV in Canada:

Very obviously, this was not a concern. Don’t have to worry about them holding out to rig the playoffs for Canadian teams

That must include a secret 2 billion deal for a 2nd team in the GTHA or they calculated a 25% tariff charge in it. :sarcasm:

Wow. Did not expect another mega long term deal.
Realistically, what other option was there? There's no chance the NHL accepts a front loaded deal with less term, and as long as current sports watching trends hold, hockey in general is going to be the driver in terms of ratings in this country. And considering that Rogers is realistically the only game in town, they can very easily accept the demands of the NHL.

Great. More years of crappy Sportsnet+ for out-of-market games.

I miss NHL.tv and the ability to choose which team feed I want to watch. I hate having like 75 Sharks games a year on there and maybe getting the Sharks broadcast a dozen times.

And that's not even getting into the crashing, lagging, desynced audio/video, and generally ridiculous over-inflated price because you can't just buy the hockey package, you have to get their inclusive premium price tier that offers me next to nothing other than hockey that I can't get much cheaper on TV.

There were plenty of option and your last sentence...

"And considering that Rogers is realistically the only game in town, they can very easily accept the demands of the NHL."

makes no sense. As the only game in town, Rogers should have been able to make demands of their own.

The funny thing about Rogers keeping TSN locked out of national coverage is that, I don’t think it matters? Doesn’t TSN have 5 channels that their regional games air on? I know there are geographic rights, but their announcers still basically work nationally, it’s just only for a few teams. Their intermissions are still very much national feel. And the ones they don’t have I think are all out west, which I’d think somewhere there is going to be a window to get. I get wanting the playoffs to be exclusive to Rogers, but is it worth it?

The last deal was a money loser so you give the NHL twice as much when you renew?

The company's management is insane and Rogers is a financial mess.

I wondered about this too. Not only did they pony up for Bell's shares of MLSE they doubled what they are paying for NHL rights. It's also not a stretch to imagine they are going to lock themselves into a long term contract with Vladimir Guerrro Jr.

I'm fascinated by what Rogers shareholders think of this. Likewise if I'm Bell I'm happy to not go down this rabbit hole when there is sports content that could be had more cheaply.

Exactly when you count regional coverage, TSN a type of NHL rights which stretches from Newfoundland to Saskatchewan. They also will be able to supplement with international hockey. It's likely a less financially risky strategy.

This times 1000! As an Isles fan in Nova Scotia, all I want is the home MSG broadcast for all the games. And I'd love the pre and post game as well. I'd pay more for that and don't even care about getting all the other games and esp don't care about getting all the dumb Jays games.

You'll see Rogers shares trend down. Good time to buy them because they'll go up once they announce a deal with Amazon to share the costs of this deal.
