I ran the update and then made a be a GM mode profile. I simmed the whole season without playing and the player developing worked fine...?

Jordan staal went from 87 to 88, Galchenyuk from 82 to 85, Leblanc from 72 to 80, Tinordi from 77 to 82, etc.

They seem to get small bumps at the end of the seaso, but no one is improving in player progression (under GM options) for me in any new GM modes I've started. Overalls work weird in that for some players, a 1 or 2 point increase will bump them up 3 overalls. So while some players saw a small increase, they're still weaker because player progression isn't working during the season (unless you noticed it working for yours).

Another bug that's being reported by someone on the EA NHL forum with GMC is players disappearing after a sim. Chara, Booth and Keith were reported so far.

But I guess there is no harm is starting a GMC and seeing if we run into the same issues.

I noticed some player progression during the first season I simmed last night in Be A GM. Only had one player on the Leafs(Gardiner) saw any increase, but 4-5 guys on the Marlies had some stats bumped. Many of my players also dropped 1 rating after I had a rough ending to the season.

The off-season bumps can be pretty big too. IIRC correctly, Rielly started at 70 overall, was 72 by season end and was 79 come preseason of year 2.

Thing is player progression is different from Be A GM and GMC. Ideally you would have to sim some GMC seasons to test it.

I'm not 100% sure obviously because the game just came out, but I'm sure it messes with the experience all the players are getting. Not only that but if you play, the goal totals and stuff are different.

I don't think so. 360 users are seeing more than just one NHL player gain experience during the season. So there's definitely a difference between the systems.

Anyway, the league will be made by noon tomorrow probably. Only join as the team you are signed up for. Lastly, if your PSN is not listed in the Excel spreadsheet linked in the OP, it means I don't know who you are and won't send you an invite (except for MoreMogilny).
