So Close, Yet Now So Far
Senators forward Shane Prince celebrates after scoring against the Gladiators on the road.
All they needed was four more wins. The Seattle Gladiators were so close, but now they are just as far away from the Cup as every other team. Besides the Ottawa Senators, who defeated Seattle in six games to win it all.
Things started off very well for the Glads, as they took game one by a score of 4-1. Nikita Filatov, who played nine games for Ottawa in 2011-12 but did not impress, scored two goals that night. However, Ottawa bounced back and won the next two games. Seattle only scored two goals in those two games. Suddenly, their offense exploded in game four, as they won 6-4 and bailed out Daniel Cotton for having an abysmal game. Dale Weise scored a hat trick that night, and his centerman Andy Miele had two goals and two assists. However, in the next game Seattle only scored one goal, losing 2-1 in double overtime. Alex Steen netted the game winning goal for the Sens. Ottawa finished things off on home ice in game six, with a 3-1 victory. Young goaltender Robin Lehner was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for MVP of the playoffs.
Game 1: 4-1 Gladiators Win
Game 2: 2-1 Senators Win
Game 3: 3-1 Senators Win
Game 4: 6-4 Gladiators Win
Game 5: 2-1 Senators 2OT Win
Game 6: 3-1 Senators Win
When asked about his team's performance, general manager Deku Scrub had nothing but positive things to say.
Reporter: "After everything they accomplished this season, are you dissapointed in your team's performance in the [Stanley Cup] Finals?"
Deku Scrub: "....Are you kidding me? We joined the league four years ago. And we just played in the Stanley Cup Finals.
I don't think I really need to explain that any further. I'm incredibly proud of what this team has done. We now know that we've built a championship-contending team, and now our job is to make sure that we bring the Stanley Cup to Seattle in the near future."
