Islanders Tie Series 2-2, Head Back To Long Island For Game 5
May 29, 2013

The Islanders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when the Canucks got into penalty trouble early as Patrick Kane and Matt Stajan added successive markers and their defense shut the Canucks down all game, limiting them to just 15 shots in the game, making former Canuck Roberto Luongo's job very easy. Andy McDonald scored a goal late in the third to make things interesting, but the Canucks were unable to mount much offense for the remainder of the game and dropped game 4 2-1.

The series now becomes a best of 3.

*****. He never got more than 45 points in any of my Be A GM's. Anyways, will maybe post an update on my habs franchise later. I will probably get to the trade deadline.

He wasn't Bobby Orr but he was a beast on my team. He played solid D but was awesome on the PP.

Islanders Win Game 5, Take 3-2 Series Lead
May 31, 2013

The New York Islanders are poised to become the first back-to-back Stanley Cup champions in many years as they claimed a 2-1 victory over Vancouver in game 5 last night. Roberto Luongo was the first star of the game, making 34 saves on 35 shots. Jaromir Jagr scored the first goal of the game 5 minutes into the first period, burying a one-timer from Vinny Prospal.

Jason Chimera tied the game at 1 with a shot that found its way through Devan Dubnyk's 5-hole into the back of the net near the 8-minute mark of the second period. Jesse Winchester would score the game winner halfway through the third period with a rebound goal.

Game 6 starts on June 1 in Vancouver at 7 PM Pacific Time.

Crosby Comes Through In The Clutch, Scores Double OT Winner To Force Game 7
June 2, 2013

Sidney Crosby is famous for scoring big goals and, while the most recent one is not nearly as infamous as the one he scored in Vancouver in 2010, it was just as important to the 18,860 on hand at Rogers Arena last night.

With the score tied 1-1 17 minutes into double overtime, a loose puck squirted to the front of the net. Sidney Crosby shook off the defender who was trying to tie him up, got his stick on the puck, and slid it 5-hole on goaltender Roberto Luongo to erupt the home fans in the arena and across the city of Vancouver.

"We haven't won anything yet," said Crosby. "We accomplished our goal for that night by forcing a game 7, but now we need to go into their home and take the cup back to ours. Until we do that, there's nothing to celebrate."

Vancouver fans clearly don't share the same sentiment as parties erupted almost immediately all over the city. Police are out in record numbers, as usual this time of the year, to ensure things don't get ugly.

Game 7 is scheduled for 7 PM Eastern Time.

I must be the only person to not play in a multi OT playoff game. I've only played in about 10 in my 6 year dynasty. I usually win it within the first 2 minutes. I'm so far undefeated. How many multi OT games have you played in?

Not a lot, but I don't play them, anyways. I do sim for the regular season and CPU vs. CPU for the playoffs. I don't like to "influence" the game based on how good or poor I am at playing the game.

Canucks Break 43-Year Drought, Lord Stanley Is Coming Home!
June 4, 2013

The Vancouver Canucks have finally done it. They have won the Stanley Cup, breaking one of the longest running cupless droughts in the league. Sidney Crosby got the ball rolling early in the first period, scoring 1:56 in with Islanders captain Vincent Lecavalier draped all over him. Jaromir Jagr would add another late in the first, a very weak goal allowed by Luongo, to give the Canucks a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Dan Cleary capitalized on a one-timer from the slot about 5 minutes into the second period. The arena was deafening to the point where the horn could barely be heard. A tie game was within reach and the Islanders saw the Canucks blow a lead around this time last year in game 7.

This, however, was not the same story as June 2012 as Andy McDonald would pound home a rebound a few short minutes later to quiet the crowd. The Canucks would go into a defensive shell, only allowing the Islanders to put another 8 shots on net the remainder of the game as the Canucks won the prize they've so desperately needed for so long; the Stanley Cup.

Devan Dubnyk took home the playoff MVP honours and hoisted the Conn Smythe trophy prior to Sidney Crosby hoisting the ultimate prize. The New York crowd politely applauded the winning team as the cup was passed around from teammate to teammate.

The Stanley Cup Parade is scheduled to take place on West Georgia Street on Saturday June 8, 2013.

Several Canucks Go Out Champions
June 19, 2013

Every year, another group of veterans we've come to know and love decide to hang up the skates and pursue other ventures in life. This year, Canucks fans will be saying goodbye to a group of men who brought the long-lusted Stanley Cup home to Vancouver. Missing amongst the group is a name many believed would retire; Jaromir Jagr, now 41 years old, announced he would like to continue playing in the NHL.

Vancouver's retirees include Vinny Prospal, Saku Koivu, Marty Reasoner, Scott Nichol, Stephane Robidas, and Andy Delmore.

Also deciding to call it quits this year is legendary defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who retires with 1647 career games and 1179 career points, marking one of the greatest careers in NHL history.

I was able to draft these three guys and only Lofthouse disappointed me. I heard how he's a franchise guy but he didn't WOW me with his skills. Great on the PP and FO but he didn't make me fall out of my chair.

Hejduk only Avalanche player chosen for All-Star team

101209_hejduk.jpg

Hejduk netting one past Calgary goalie Mikku Kiprusoff

Milan Hejduk once again makes an appearance in the All-Star for the fourth time in his career as he is third in the league in goals with 27. He also leads the Avalanche in points with 48. Even though Milan is having another great year the team is not. Now the worst team in the league with an 18-29-4 record many are questioning the teams consistency especially in goaltender James Reimer who holds a decent record of 8 wins in 15 games and 2.56 GAA. Coach Joe Sacco told us that, "James is a good goalie and has a lot of potential, but I think for right now he's still getting used to the starting job." GM Dan Murray told us the same thing and added that, "Reimer is playing a different strategy and game in Colorado compared to Toronto."

Injuries have not taken a big toll on the team this year as the only major injury was the pulled groin of T.J. Galiardi which takes him out of the roster until March. Murray stated that the team will continue trying to improve as quickly as possible to try to make the playoffs.

Defensive Troubles

Troy-Brouwers-hat-trick-helps-Washington-Capitals-takedown-Tampa-Bay-Lightning-NHL-Update-123625.jpg

Washington's Troy Brouwer puts the puck past Antti Niemi.

It's January 5th, 2014. The Tampa Bay Lightning currently sit fifth in the Eastern Conference. Things don't look too bad, do they? Well, take a look at the team's stats. They have been scoring goals, with the third best offense in the league. But they have the fourth-worst goals against per game rating. Their powerplay has been decent but their penalty kill has been abysmal.

The Bolts' goaltenders have not been great either. Antti Niemi has below average stats (2.86 GAA and .904%) and backup Tim Thomas has been awful. General manager Deku Scrub called up rookie goalie Andrei Vasilevski back in December, and he has been playing decent for a rookie. Right now, the Bolts don't have one main guy they can trust in the net, but Deku Scrub felt the defense was more of a problem.

The Lightning made two trades to address this issue:

Tampa Bay Receives: Dion Phaneuf + Ben Scrivens

Toronto Receives: Eric Brewer + Tim Thomas

Tampa Bay Receives: Brad Stuart + 3rd Round Pick

Detroit Receives: Paul Martin

Lineup
Simon Gagne - Steven Stamkos - Brett Connolly
Ryan Malone - Vincent Lecavalier - Teddy Purcell
Matt Schoblocher - Jarret Stoll - Chris Neil
Steve Bernier - Nate Thompson - George Parros

Dion Phaneuf - Victor Hedman
Alex Edler - Jared Cowen
Matt Carle - Brad Stuart

2012-2013 SENATORS MIDSEASON REPORT

ox281287064635910562.jpg

Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek are #1 and #2 in points for the 4th place Senators.

At the halfway point, the Ottawa Senators have done a complete reversal of last season's 28th place finish. Their 53 points (41-24-12) are good enough for 4th in the NHL, behind only Vancouver, Boston, Los Angeles, and tied with Philadelphia. The team is scoring at a healthy 2.95 goals per game clip (6th), while allowing only 2.61 goals per game (13th). Not all is rosy, however. The team has only 126 power plays (26th), and could stand to convert more frequently at 18.3% (15th). The Senators have been shorthanded 141 times (18th), giving them 15 more penalty kills than power plays, and they kill 83.7% of them (11th).

Goaltender Craig Anderson has held the fort well, allowing 2.39 goals per game while stopping 91.4% of the shots he faces. Back Jose "Three-or-more" is living up to his name, allowing 3.62 goals per game and stopping only 85.7% of shots.

The Binghamton Senators have also had a reversal of fortune, as they sit 9th in the AHL with 38 points, led by their stingy defense, which allows only 2.47 goals per game. Goaltender Robin Lehner is struggling, allowing only 2.35 goals per game, but stopping a disquieting 90.8% of shots he faces. Offensively, the team is led by winger Tomas Zaborsky, whose 35 points (13G, 22A) in 32 games tie him for 2nd in the AHL.

"Fantastic Finish"

Bolts defender Victor Hedman celebrates a powerplay goal with his teammates.

Even though they didn't win their division this season, coach Guy Boucher and general manager Deku Scrub are happy with their team's overall performance.

"Obviously, the way we started the season was terrible. I was worried about losing my job," said Guy Boucher with a chuckle. "I'm glad Mr. Scrub took matters into his own hands and made those trades last January. They benefited the team greatly. Dion and Brad are great locker-room guys and were also great on the ice."

The Lightning finished with a record of 47-30-5, good for 99 points, which is two more than they had last season. As the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, they will face off against the New York Rangers in round one of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In the AHL, the Norfolk Admirals finished first in their conference. Dustin Tokarski had to take over in net halfway through the season after Vasilevski was called up, and he was stellar all year. Dana Tyrell had 77 points in 76 games, Teuvo Teravainen had 69 points, and Devante Smith-Pelly had 67 points. AHL rookie defender Ryan Murray also had a great season, with 45 points

Tampa Bay Sweeps New York in Round One

502A0001_2_JPEG_SCREENSHOT_GYU.jpg

Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier celebrates in style after scoring against the Rangers.

Just like last year, round one of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs was a breeze for the Tampa Bay Lightning. It only took four games for the squad to get past the New York Rangers. Next, the Lightning will have to face the Washington Capitals, who won their division this year, but were swept by the Lightning last year.

Game 1: 4-3 Win
Game 2: 2-1 OT Win
Game 3: 3-2 Win
Game 4: 3-1 Win

Three Stars of Round One

1st Star: Andrei Vasilevski
In his first ever NHL playoff series, the young Russian goaltender shined. He had a GAA of 1.75 and a save percentage of .944%.
2nd Star: Steven Stamkos
He didn't have the best playoff run last year, but he started off the 2014 playoffs with a bang. Stamkos put up seven points in four games, recording two goals and five assists.
3rd Star: Simon Gagne
Gagne is known for being clutch in the playoffs, and so far, he has been. He has scored five goals and six points in four games.

In the AHL playoffs, the Norfolk Admirals are off to round two, after defeating the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in six games. Forward prospect Anthony Bardaro was the star of round one, scoring four goals and six points. They will play the Worchester Sharks in round two.

[fieldset="Thursday November 21st 2013 - Smith-Pelly receives green light from medical staff, Gudbranson ready for next week"]
Great news for the Montreal Canadiens as Smith-Pelly and Gudbranson have both successfully recovered from their minor concussions. Both have received the to-go signal from the team's medical staff, but only Smith-Pelly will play tomorrow against the Ottawa Senators, as he's been back to training since a few days already.

Gudbranson should play next monday against the Winnipeg Jets. He's only been back on skates since yesterday and the coaching staff wants to make sure that he is completely ready when he comes back.[/fieldset]

[fieldset="Saturday December 7th 2013 - Bad luck Gudbranson ; Habs' defenseman suffers another injury"]
Gudbranson is certainly not lucky with his health this year. After missing next to a month due to a concussion, coming back two weeks ago, he has now suffered an herniated disc at the morning training. It will not require surgery, but he is expected to miss another month of play to recover.

Considering Beaulieu's lack of effectiveness in his own zone when he was recalled to replace Gudbranson a month ago, the Canadiens prefered to recall Teemu Eronen this time. At 23 years old, it will be his first experience in the NHL.[/fieldset]

[fieldset="Sunday December 29th 2013 - Santa doesn't like Kristo"]
Another player of the Montreal Canadiens fell yesterday against the New York Islanders.

Danny Kristo, who has done quite well so far this season as a rookie with 18 points in 38 games, blocked a powerful slapshot of ex-Habs defenseman Mark Streit. He needed the help of his teammate to go back to the locker room. After further analysis by the medical team, it was determined that Kristo had his ankle's bone broken, which will require at least one month or two of resting. Etem was called from Hamilton.[/fieldset]

[fieldset="Thursday January 2nd 2014 - New Years smiles to Gudbranson"]
Gudbranson's herniated disc healed faster than expected. He completed the whole team's training program this morning without any issue. As a result, Eronen has been sent back to Hamilton since Gudbranson is set to play next Monday when the team will visit the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh.[/fieldset]

[fieldset="Thursday January 9th 2014 - Injuries continue to strike the Canadiens"]
After Kristo and Gudbranson who both suffered significant injuries, defenseman Alexei Emelin suffered a torn ACL yesterday against the Flyers after he was hit by Zac Rinaldo and felt awkwardly. He is expected to miss 5 weeks of play to recover completely from this serious injury.

Ville Pokka has been called up to replace him on the third defensive pairing along with Jarred Tinordi.[/fieldset]

[fieldset="Saturday January 18th 2014 - Gudbranson feels post-concussion syndroms again ; to miss rest of the season"]
As if things could not get worst for the Montreal Canadiens, the team held a press conference this morning to announce a very bad new.

"Following a hit on him last night against the New York Islanders, Erik told me he was not feeling well", said Therrien. "He added he had painful headaches and felt dizzy. I immediately reached for medical assistance to take Gudbranson to the medical center."

"It seems he was not completely recovered from his previous concussion and now the consequence will be that he will need over 6 months of rest to recover fully" added GM Marc Bergevin. "It sure is a desastrous announcement for our team. But right now, our focus is to win the most games possible, even without one of our best players", concluded captain Tomas Plekanec.

Gudbranson played 24 games this season, getting 2 goals and 9 points, but mostly, was an impressive +10, on a team which the leader in this category is Emelin with a +14. As Beaulieu is also injured, Eronen has been recalled again to replace Gudbranson.[/fieldset]

[fieldset="Wednesday January 29th 2014 - Time for the All-Star Game !"]

Here are the lineups for tonight's game.

RANGERS ROUT SENATORS IN GAME 7

The Ottawa Senators came back from a 3-1 series deficit, but came up short as the New York Rangers took Game 7 5-0 in Ottawa, ending the Senators season. The Binghamton Senators were also eliminated, in 6 games by the Syracuse Crunch.

"We're obviously disappointed to be going home," said Jason Spezza, who led the team with five goals and five assists in the fourteen playoff games. "We feel that we could have won that game and the series." Many wonder what would have happened if Kyle Turris, Ryan Whitney, Sammy Pahlsson, and Chris Phillips had been available for the entire series. Turris and Pahlsson missed two games each, while Whitney and Phillips both missed three games. Winger Travis Moen missed time as well. "I **** the bed," said goaltender Craig Anderson of his Game 7 performance, during which he allowed 5 of the 26 total goals allowed in the playoffs. Anderson still finished with a 1.78 GAA and .936 SV%.

Mike Hoffman led the way with 6 goals and 2 assists for the Binghamton Senators. Robin Lehner posted a 2.22 GAA and .909 SV%.
