Patriots/NFL NFL Patriots Off Season

Hunter is also a gamble at WR. He doesn’t have NFL weight, and he’s not known as a speedy kid. If he puts on weight will it make slower?

Hunter is ranked as the 4th best WR in this draft
Hunter weighed in a 188 lbs at the combine.

DaVonta Smith was 6-0, 170 at the 2021 combine. He's done OK.

Garrett Wilson was 5-11, 183. He's also pretty good.

He might have been the 4th-best WR in last year's draft behind Harrison, Nabers, and Odunze. I think anyone who thinks he's the 4th-best WR in this draft is out of their minds. Elite ball skills, elite run after catch ability, elite change of direction, and while I don't think he's a 4.2 speed guy, my guess is that he'll run somewhere between 4.38 and 4.45, which is plenty fast.

Hunter makes me nervous for some reason, I’d prefer Tetairoa, if we’re picking a receiver. He’s bigger, and might be faster too.

He also doesn’t run great routes, struggles off the line with physicality, lacks upper body strength, and doesn’t have great acceleration after catch. I don’t mean to beat on him but anyone claiming this kid doesn’t come with major question marks as a wideout is kidding themselves. I’m not against picking him but he’s not a sure thing like last summers WR group was.

As for the bolded, you think he would be better than: ?
Brian Thomas Jr
Ladd McConkey
Xavier Worthy

There's no way Tetairoa McMillan is faster than Travis Hunter.

McMillan is a possession receiver who makes a ton of catches within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage by finding holes in zones or using his body to shield defenders from making a play on the ball. When he makes plays down the field, they're usually contested catches.

That profile scares me WAY more Hunter's.

Those deficiencies in his game? They'll all improve with experience and physical development. But you can't teach someone to have his level of ball skills and dynamism

And yeah... coming out of college, I think he's a better WR prospect than Thomas, McConkey, and Worthy. I'd personally put him ahead of Odunze, and on Harrison's level. I liked Nabers slightly better as a WR.

Maybe this is a silly take, and I don't follow college football very closely, but based on what I've read/seen, it seems like Carter is a no-brainer if he slips to 4.

If he's not there, again just based on what I've read/heard, I can't see a reason not to take Hunter considering that people seem to think he's a first round pick on both sides of the ball.

While he may not be a top 4 guy at WR or CB, the fact that he can play both, seems to me like you're getting two players in one pick.
(I get that he won't play full time at both)

But, this year maybe he plays WR for 40/45 snaps and CB for 20/25, but in 2026 they find a legit 1WR and the script flips.

Seems like quality versatility like he potentially provides can be very valuable.

Sounds great, if you’re picking that guy in the 2nd or 3rd round, not 4th overall

IMO Brian Thomas would have been ahead of Hunter as well.
Nabers is 6'0 200 lbs and is an elite WR, so the 188 lbs does not worry me. He should max out at 195 when he he fully developed.
My take on Hunter is that he has not concentrated 100% on being a WR at the College level, so he has unlimited potential at the NFL level, if the Pats use him at WR and occasionally at CB / nickel?
He is too good of an athlete to pass on him if he is around at 4.
What will make the draft interesting is if Hunter/Ward and Carter are taken ahead of the Pats, do they take TMac?
