I'm kind of confused by the Joshua Dobbs signing. I know they're considering trading Milton (which I think is a mistake), but Dobbs? really? I'd rather they brought in a vet that has actually done something in the NFL to help mentor Maye. I mean Flacco would have been a good choice to mentor Maye and if something happened, he's still serviceable.

Dobbs is a really intelligent guy who has played for Vrabel in the past, probably a comfort thing. As far as backup QB go you could do a lot worse imo

It’s an improvement for sure. If I’m knit picking I don’t like that almost all of their signings yesterday are on the wrong side of 30. They still need a left tackle (I’ll cringe if they pick Campbell at 4 because they couldn’t land a LT in free agency).

Also not much added in terms of weapons yet. It sounds as if they’re at least making an effort (see Godwin). Hoping they anti up for Kupp. He’s not perfect but he’d clearly be the #1 here.

I thought most of their signings were in the 25-29 age range?

Steelers Expected to Trade for Patriots $4.2 Million QB as Justin Fields Departs

The Pittsburgh Steelers now appear to be staring at the 2025 NFL season without a quarterback. The New England Patriots now have an extra quarterback. And according to Andrew Vasquez of the USA Today Steelerswire, that spare Patriots quarterback could “give the Pittsburgh Steelers a chance to remain among the AFC’s elite right away.”

A trade with the Steelers sending what Vasquez expects would be a Day 2 draft pick to New England in exchange for Pittsburgh’s potential quarterback of the future now appears, if not inevitable then at least expected. According to Vasquez, the move would avoid “wasting the future on a free-agent QB or an even more unproven prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft.” And from the Patriots’ perspective, 25-year-old, six-foot-five, 246 pound quarterback Joe Milton III was their sixth-round pick, 193rd overall, just last year.

From the Patriots point of view, converting Milton, who for the second year in a row appears destined to spend most of the season in the New England practice squad, into a second-round or third-round draft pick would have to be considered a tidy profit. The Steelers own the 52nd overall pick in the 2025 draft, as well as the 83rd overall selection.

Why is a Milton-to-Steelers Trade Now Possible?

How did the two teams get to this point?

The Steelers divided quarterback duties in 2024 between Justin Fields — who was drafted 11th overall by the Chicago Bears in 2021, and 13-year veteran Russell Wilson who won a Super Bowl while with the Seattle Seahawks in the 2013 season. But despite some expectations that the Steelers were leaning toward retaining Fields, instead they allowed the 26-year-old out of Ohio State to escape.

Fields on Monday signed a two-year, $40 million deal to replace future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers as the New York Jets’ primary signal-caller. As for Wilson, he is also a free agent and so far Pittsburgh has shown no real interest in bringing him back for his age-37 season.

While Wilson did not find any takers on Monday, the NFL’s first full day of the free agent signing period, a reporter for the New York-based cable sports network SNY wrote that the Tennessee Titans are “interested” in acquiring Wilson.

That would leave the Pittsburgh quarterback position — which has been in flux since another future Hall of Famer, Ben Roethlisberger, retired in 2021 after holding it down for 18 years — wide open.

The Patriots’ quarterback position is set, with 2024 No. 3 overall draft pick Drake Maye, out of North Carolina, securing his spot in his 12 rookie season starts, earning an alternate Pro Bowl berth and placing seventh in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting.

But in reality, Maye played only 11 games because in his 12th start, in Week 18, he was replaced by Milton who went on to lead the Patriots to a 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills — and he did it in spectacular fashion putting his elite, if raw, athletic ability on full display.

Fired Coach Mayo Was Milton’s Backer in New England

But reportedly, according to Daniel Rotman of Pro Football Focus, the surprising pick of Milton in last year’s draft was “largely driven by Jerod Mayo, who was his primary advocate within the organization.” Mayo was the Patriots’ head coach in 2024, before being fired after a single season and replaced with Mike Vrabel.

Asked in late February whether he was open to trading Milton, Vrabel demurred, saying it was too early to discuss trades. But he made his feelings known on Monday, when the Patriots signed veteran QB Josh Dobbs to a two-year, $8 million deal.

That makes Dobbs nearly four times as expensive as Milton, who will enter the second year of his four-year rookie contract, worth a total of $4.2 million. The signing also appears to make Milton expendable, and according to Fox Sports reporter Jordan Schultz the Patriots “have had discussions on trading (Milton) and would like to trade him to the right situation to continue his development in the NFL.”

Dobbs himself was drafted by the Steelers in 2018 with their fourth-round pick, 135th overall, out of Tennessee. Milton was also a Tennessee Volunteer, and won the 2023 Orange Bowl MVP, throwing for three touchdowns and 251 yards, in the Vols’ 31-14 win over Clemson.

You know how you get irrationally attached to bit players for your franchise? That was me with Dobbs and Tonga. No idea how Tonga hasn't stuck yet. I think he will be good for you. Dobbs was great on Minny for a couple games, leader and just fun as hell

Lou, admittedly I don't know much about Dobbs. What QB do you say his play resembles?

NFL Rumors: Cooper Kupp's Stance On Possibly Joining Patriots

The New England Patriots are among those linked to wideout Cooper Kupp this offseason, and the franchise might’ve caught the 31-year-old’s eye.

Kupp’s next landing spot remains one of the biggest mysteries, and New England knows it has a depth issue. The franchise has targeted premier free-agent wide receivers for the past few offseasons, missing out on names such as DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley and most recently, Chris Godwin — all while the void remains unfilled.

So with Kupp, a soon-to-be free agent, currently in no-man’s land, the Patriots have their next opportunity. And to make matters (slightly) more favorable for New England, the Super Bowl LVI MVP has already given Foxbrough some thought, too.

“According to a league source, Kupp is curious about the prospect of playing in New England and has shared that curiosity with some close to him,” Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reported Tuesday. “Kupp has personal and professional connections to Patriots, starting with ex-college teammate and fellow wideout Kendrick Bourne, who has repeatedly advocated for Kupp to come to New England on social media. The two remain friendly, sources say.”

In theory, the Patriots have a chance to make Kupp a part of their offseason blueprint for several reasons. Kupp and New England wideout Kendrick Bourne have a tight-knit relationship dating back to their time as college teammates at Eastern Washington University. Bourne has campaigned for Kupp’s Gillette Stadium arrival, and the match makes sense. The Patriots have money to splurge, quarterback Drake Maye needs reliable targets and the organization needs a page-turning finish in 2025.

Ideally, a playoff appearance is what the organization should target, coming off back-to-back last-place finishes in the AFC East. That wasn’t possible with the several roster flaws that inflated the difficulty of Maye’s rookie season as the offensive line, available targets and coaching staff weren’t any help.

Kupp was originally supposed to be traded this offseason, but as the Los Angeles Rams have struggled to find a trade suitor, plans have changed. The Rams have now pivoted with their plans to depart from Kupp, and according to ESPN, the organization is now willing to release the eight-year veteran instead.

That means the Patriots wouldn’t have to surrender any assets to Los Angeles to acquire Kupp. New England’s front office has already gotten busy ever since free agency opened, adding Milton Williams, Carlton Davis, Robert Spillane and Harold Landry, among others, to help strengthen head coach Mike Vrabel’s locker room.

Another tie from the past that could help New England’s case for Kupp is tight end coach Thomas Brown, who coached the Rams from 2020 to 2022 amid Kupp’s tenure. It’s all speculation, but even aside from the Bourne and Brown links, Kupp joining the Patriots makes sense for both sides.

Kupp played 12 games last season, all while recovering from a Week 2 ankle injury, and totaled 710 receiving yards with six touchdowns.

FWIW, according to OverTheCap.com, even after their spending spree yesterday, the Patriots still lead the league in effective cap space for 2025, at just over $85 million.

All of their signings have relatively low base salaries for 2025 before they spike in 2026.

I want him here. He can still help this team. Gotta have vets on the team to help the youth movement. He still had gas left in the tank. And we know he can catch the ball. Imagine thinking this guy wouldn't be fantastic with Maye.
