Patriots/NFL NFL Patriots Off Season - The Draft

The best RB on the free agent market this year got a 1-year, $5.25 million contract.
Awful free agent class. Najee Harris isn’t good and the 2nd best back was who, maybe Ty Johnson?

A bunch of them got paid pretty decently last year when the class was pretty strong. It’s not left tackle money but it wasn’t scraps either.

Feels like a simple math problem. They have 9 WRs on the current roster, but only 7 of them have any kind of chance of making the final 53: Diggs, Hollins, Douglas, Boutte, Bourne, Polk, and Baker. They're most likely to keep 6 on the opening roster, so at least one has to go, but likely two if they draft a WR as most expect.

Given the guaranteed money involved, Diggs and Hollins are likely locks. Douglas has been the top receiver in yards each of the past 2 years, so he feels close to a lock as well. That means two of Boutte, Bourne, Polk, and Baker likely need to go. I think they're hoping to have the problem partially solved by someone trading for either Boutte or Bourne (or even both), and then maybe Baker is waived with the plan to get him on the practice squad. Polk probably survives another year.

Simon Charles on X posted that the Bears and Pats have a deal in place if Carter and Hunter are gone before NE picks.

Bears give them #10 and #41 and next years 3rd for the Pats to move back.

Apparently they want Jeanty.

You mean the guy with the double PhD in journalism and satire? I've got some bad news...

My real fear is that someone actually offers them something dumb for #4, but the drop means losing out on Campbell, Membou, and maybe even Banks, so they reject it.
Trade down to like 10ish or into the teens and pick Simmons, that might be my play if possible

This is why I was so confused by the Hollins signing. Still doesn't make sense to me, given that he doesn't really give you anything more than the guys they already had under contract.

Hollins was very much a McDaniels move. He was WR2 on his 2022 Raiders team. He also offers special teams value and leadership.

Personally, I wouldn't have signed him, but that's the logic behind it. I'm not sure they knew they were going to get Diggs when he signed and also felt they needed to add someone to the room. He's pretty cheap, but his guaranteed money is just enough where it would be a surprise to cut him.

It’s not a fear - Vrabel looks at Campbell as Logan Mankins

he’s the right guy for this team
