Inappropriate to call it a smear campaign. That's clearly a Red Sox thing.

You have to be able to justify why you made a trade. If people are just going to take the reasons you made a trade and call it a smear campaign, I guess there's nothing you can do.

Bill is all about ultra privacy. Of course these reasons weren't known beforehand.

So who wants to guess who will be the passing down linebacker other than Hightower by the end of the year?

a) Roberts
b) Van Noy
c) Mingo
d) McClellin
e) None of the above - either a lot of dime package with Chung in the box or Ninkovich or some other guy stands up and plays LB

I'm torn between a, b and c. Rooting for Mingo, but haven't been impressed. Probably expecting Roberts to be a 3 down guy.

Bill Belichick always listens to his GM

Now Collins has to pray he stays healthy in Cleveland - obviously something was said in negotiations that pissed Bill off and off into exile goes Collins.

Collins goes from one of the NFL’s best teams – the Patriots are 7-1 and have Super Bowl aspirations – to its worst. Cleveland is the league’s only winless team, falling to 0-8 after losing to the Jets Sunday. The Patriots defeated the Browns in Week 5, 33-13.

According to a league source, the Patriots were “having a lot of trouble†in negotiations with Collins for a long-term contract. Another league source said Collins turned down an offer of $11 million per year.

Browns 3rd will be first 3rd round pick. The comp pick would have happened after the 3rd round. And it could be at end of 4th round, too. Still, not close to a football expert, but shocked.

Edit: this post is incorrect

Van Noy was a beast in college playing Edge, he was misused in Detroit as an inside linebacker so im not sure what Bill wants to do with him. Im hopeful for Mingo as well.

In these cases, Bill is usually right...and fan overreactions usually turn out to be wrong.

It is what it is. We should be used to this by now.

Reports are that the Patriots are not done on the trade market. Hopefully another shoe drops here that makes sense

Personally I am happy about this trade since it added to the post count of the previous NFL thread that I was locked out of. ;)

Given that Bill Belichick started the year 3-1 without second and third string QB's (that weren't even healthy lol), I'm going to trust that he knows what he's doing and can manage to take the team pretty far without Jamie Collins.

I totally understand the fans that are saying how difficult and frustrating it is to bring up concerns about the trade while having to hear it's a "smear campaign" against Bill and what not. Look, the guy does make suspect decisions. But, it's pretty obvious after fifteen or so years, that the guy operates on a completely separate level than any other coach or FO maybe in this league's history.

It's honestly just part of the Patriots' way. And it's a winning way.

The Patriots and Red Sox are polar opposites when it comes to handling these things.

So true.

Patriots: "Letting this guy go is really difficult as it leaves us thin at the position. Welp, team first. See ya."

Red Sox: "This guy is very up and down. He has a lot of problems staying in shape and there's a lot of questions as to whether he's really committed. Ah, let's take a little bit of a risk and give him 8 or so years at 20 million."

In fairness, there is a big difference between the first or second pick in the 3rd round versus the 35th pick in the 3rd round or whatever it would be.

But I agree- Still thought they could get a 2nd for him. I guess not.

It's Cleveland's compensatory pick (if they get one), not their own 3rd.

At best, it's only a few spots higher than our hypothetical comp pick would have been. In reality, there's a chance we actually get a LOWER pick than if we just kept him and let him walk in FA.

Mind-boggling.

It's clear BB wanted him out of here...

Shocked. I thought Collins would have been in New England for a long time. I can understand the logistics of trading him ( huge pay raise coming up, poor play of late ) but it's still a huge surprise to me. I've always liked Collins and this ranks right up there with waking on one morning to see Lawyer Miloy was gone. BB is usually right with these decisions but ****... this sucks.

Michael Lombardi certainly didn't hold anything back via twitter

Not surprised by the Pats trading Colllins. Not been playing well at all they need to get the defense fixed. This will get their attention

You are either coaching it or allowing it to happen. Belichick decided he was not going to allow it to happen. Colllins talented but...

Collins on the second play of the game does whatever he wants and Bills gain 28 yards. Been happening all year. It was not going to continue

I have been all over how badly the Patriots defense has been playing all season. This is not just a one game decision

Watch the tape. Grade the player. This is a production business not a potential business. Going on @TheHerd to discuss the trade at 1030 pst

But they are getting the pick in 2017, not 2018. There is value in getting said pick one season sooner.

I'll also say I'm not ready to pencil in Hightower for a contract extension yet. I hope we keep him and I've long said I prefer him to Collins, but I still wouldn't be surprised if he signs elsewhere.

Unless they feel around the 4th round of this years draft is loaded with prospects at an area of need, I don't see that value. Compensatory picks fall in the same range (end of the round) in each year, so there's no real draft slot value taking it this year vs next year.

Just to put this in perspective -- the Pats got a 5th round pick from Denver for AJ Derby. Depending on where Denver finishes and whether Clevelend ends up getting a 3rd round comp pick, there's a chance those two picks are less than 30 slots apart :help:

I have to say I have been extremely impressed with Roberts. He has been everywhere; he looks explosive, he hits, he's emotional, he just looks involved.

We need another pass rusher very badly, though.

That's the thing about BB: he'll say all the right things when you're going out the door and will never bad mouth you openly, but his actions speak otherwise, generally. It's clear he was going to move on from the player.
