How were the Padres 9 games over .500 going into this series? Is the National league really that bad?

From what I have seen out of them in this series, they f***ing stink and they’ve been making 1 fundamental mistake after another.

8-1 vs COL/PIT and they took advantage of a struggling Braves team opening week by sweeping them 4-0

They're not this bad, though. The offense is in a major funk

I'm just tuning into the game looking at the pitching line, why did they lift Francis after only 4 innings? didn't appear to be doing too horribly.
A combination of things: he did a solid job of working around trouble other than the HR, but he was also mostly in trouble. He hasn't been very good this year and has gotten crushed whenever he's gone a third time through the lineup. The pen has been very well rested lately.

Getting him through at least 5 would have been nice, but I think in this case it was a safe move to hand it over to the pen.

Lots of hard contact and deep fly balls and I don't think they wanted him going through the Padres lineup a 3rd time. He escaped with 2 runs in 4 innings but this was not an impressive start for him, stuff didn't look great.

Hoffman's so weird. Arguably the most dominant pitcher in the league in April, then in May he alternates between looking like that guy again, and completely imploding. Ugh.

The last 3 blown saves have all started with walks that were weak to give up and then everything has imploded from there.
