They are also by and large coachable by coaches that never played the game at the highest level and other teammates and professionals fairly constantly.
The youngest coach in the NHL is 37, that's not really applicable to the point I'm making

I also don't think teenagers should coach in the NHL, if that means anything here

It is in the sense of acting like life experience is some be-all, end-all to captaining an NHL team when it just isn't. Lots of successful coaches never played in the NHL and don't have that life experience to convey to a player much of anything related to the game. That's the point you're making here. Teenagers have and will continue to lead NHL teams in the future and the large majority of players are not going to give one shit about their life experience to that point because that's not the manner in which they're leading. Life experience is one small part of being a leader on a team and not every leader needs to have it at the moment that they're being asked to lead because there are other ways to contribute to that aspect of things.

Wait, so now captains in pro sports need to be able to give relationship, childcare, tax, general life advice to their team mates? What?

Pro athletes live in a bubble. They are pampered by the team and their WAGs. They only hit the real world once they stop playing.
No, but they need to be taken seriously as a peer

I don't think the story of how you overcame adversity and came back in some game in college is going to be impressive to a 36 year old who's been in the league for a decade

WRT Macklin, the questions about his captaincy candidacy include:

  1. Does he have the respect of his teammates so he can lead them?
  2. Does he have the maturity to lead as a captain?
I cannot answer those questions from 500 miles away.

That's what coaches and team therapists are for. A captain is not they only person you can talk to about your issues.

I’m certain that when it comes to being a professional hockey player everyone on the team takes Celebrini seriously. His talent and dedication. If anything my concern with him as captain would be him being too serious for the team. He hasn’t be kicked out of the rink on off days by the coach. Nobody on the team is working harder than him.

You can be 500 miles away and still see that he has the teams respect and they will follow him. Now maybe maturity is an issue as seen by the step brother T-Shirts yesterday but I think the overall maturity of professional athletes is much younger than regular society. Many of them were away from home starting at 15 and know nothing other than hockey culture.

Why would anyone not take Celebrini seriously as a peer? He's better than most of them already. You make a player like him the captain to signal to everyone where the team is going and where it starts. If a player of any age can't buy into him as a leader, they don't belong here. A player of that status as a veteran shouldn't need a win one for the gipper speech nor need to be told about adversity. But they probably do need to be told what Celebrini sees when he's on the ice that they're not getting because otherwise he wouldn't already be better than them in a slew of different ways. His leadership as a kid will largely be on the ice. The stuff you're talking about is more of a group dynamic than anything else and no one leader needs to have all these attributes before they become captain regardless of their age.

Is he? Or is he the best player who is also hard working? Because having those qualities is different from being "the leader" of a team.
I also don't think wearing a C really matters and having a strong group of leaders is what drives team success vs a single guy. Did it matter that Thornton had the A? No people still listened when he spoke

I don't care how good you are at your craft, if a 19 year old tried to give me a motivational speech when I'm falling on hard times, given his lack of lived experience, my immediate first thought is going to be "don't you have some homework to do?"
Before I know how to respond to this, I have an important question.

What is the cup size of the 19 year old in question who is trying to motivate me? :sarcasm:

I wish I'd had Tyler Toffoli at my house last night to help me figure out how to properly complete my Form 8889. I asked Macklin first, but I couldn't understand what he was saying with all the milk and cookies in his mouth.

Captain and his wife/girlfriend nominally set up a lot of team stuff. (Could delegate some.

I've heard of some HC wives getting involved as well.
I’m sure the vets would be more than happy to help coordinate those things. Plus they could just get a sharks intern to help them.

Also Cat Toffoli seems more than willing to take on the WAG organizer role.

If I recall correctly was Couture single still when he was named captain. I heard he was pretty notorious for being a bachelor.

If I had a new grad coworker, I would look at them differently compared to someone with more experience, even if the new grad was super skilled and smarter than my more experienced coworkers.

Regardless, I’d imagine the players usually have a huge input into this decision, if they say they want to follow Mack, then do it.
