Speculation: Next captain ?

Not a word you see everyday on HFB.

I agree with you 100%, though I don't think management thinks the same way you do. Which is why I think they'd lean more towards the more calm influence that a Gorges would provide. Over a more flamboyant style of leadership that PK would provide.

I disagree with you, I get the impression that Bergevin is a big fan of Subban's personality and character. Especially because of Subban's passion and love for this team, something Bergevin shares with Subban, and obviously looks for.

Fair enough, but I still see our management team as having a more "old school" outlook. I'm not saying that they don't appreciate what Subban brings to the team. I just don't feel that he would be their first choice. I obviously don't know for sure, so it's all just speculation on my part.

Everyone used to say how immature PK was and a locker room problem, now few people bring up his immaturity. He's made leaps and bounds and this is about next capt, after another full season under his belt, he'll be ready to next year

Please explain your reasoning behind your belief that Subban is immature and selfish. Because that is far from the truth,if anything, Subban is the most selfless guy on the team. For such a vocal guy, he has never publicly criticized a teammate or management even when he may have had a reason to be displeased with them. Instead, he ALWAYS goes out of his way to speak well of his teammates and management, but always criticizes himself even when he doesn't have to.

As for immaturity? Please. I wont even bother defending that because I know you dont have any legitimate reason for saying this. Flamboyance has nothing to do with maturity, especially since the flamboyance helps the team win. This team is graced with several mature young players, and Subban is one of them. No question.

Woaaah there cowboy, don't get me wrong, I love Subban. I wanted them to draft him after his performances at the World Juniors. I was at his first rookie and professional camp, I have a poster with his name signed on it from his first practice as a Habs prospect. I have a Tshirt with his name on the back and will get his jersey when I can afford to, he is my favorite player by a mile. But the fact is, he is still mighty raw. Captains don't badtrip when they score. Captains are respectful. Subban is a cocky *******, if you can't see that you haven't watched the game. Again, I am not saying its a bad thing, I love it. Just not as a captain.

What kind of player criticizes other players and isn't hard on himself? Name me one, I'll show you a guy that won't last in this league. That's not premise to be a named captain, every player does that. ****ing Ryan White does that.

Let's compare the situation with Kane and Toews in Chicago. Kane, IMO, reminds of Subban in a sense that he is a (over)confident, flamboyant, cocky player. Doesn't make you a bad player, just makes you a player that shouldn't be a captain. Toews on the other hand, is calm, quiet, leads by example. If you read past the first few lines of my post you would have realized that I WANT Subban to be a captain, just not NOW. He still has some behavior patterns to change. For example, he almost always complains after a penalty is called on him. This, IMO, is unacceptable for a captain to do.

Subban is a great leader, probably the most vocal guy in the room. Didn't think you would take MY OPINION as a ****ing personal attack man

I would say Subban but I think Gorges will be captain. Which upsets me somewhat because i don't think Gorges can lead a team on the ice, off the ice sure seems like a great leader. But I just don't think gorges is a player that can lead a team to victory, and that's the most important thing for me when i look for a captain.

I think captains should be good/important players to a team and I dont think Gorges is that good... Every defenseman named captain was a #1 or #2 see Chara or Pronger not a number 4 with good games
And just like I didnt like Gionta named captain because he is not a first liner on a great team
If Gorges was a top2 defenseman I wouldnt mind

Despite a good group of veteran leaders on the Habs (Gorges, Prust, Plekanec, Markov, Moen, etc.) I think the clear choice is Subban.

Quite simply, the Habs havent had a player of Subban's calibre in quite some time, and when you have someone THAT good, you give him the C and let the rest sort itself out later. Stamkos will take over the C when St Louis is done, Giroux took the C in Philly, Ovechkin got the C despite possibly not knowing how to speak the native language of most of his teammates. On top of being our best player, PK is also the Habs' most intense/driven one. He may get in players' faces from time to time, but i like that aspect of his game and with the C you can bet that players will be slower to dismiss him.

In my experience playing competitive hockey, unless the best player on your team had serious character issues (or the coach's son played for your team), he got the C. Sure off ice leadership is important, but your best player needs to be your leader on the ice, and all the intangibles in the world won't help unless you back it up with skill. Maybe it's just me, but i used to hate getting "tips" from scrubs and guys who were making the same mistakes and worse than i was. When a guy who is clearly better than you gives you advice, you usually tend to listen.

Subban says ALL the right things to the media about the team, despite what l'antichambre says. He is personable and seems like an incredibly thoughtful kid (thinking of the jersey he had signed for his friend's sick dad as an example). He's a fiery competitor, he seems to elevate his game when the rest of the team looks sluggish and never takes a night or day off. I haven't even mentioned his legendary workout habits either.

Simply put, PK should be one of the faces of this franchise for years and years to come. Give him the C, make this his team, give him the long term contract and then move on to other problems.

I realize that i am very much in the minority, but i consider PK's character an asset rather than a liability, and i always have. The kid is cocky no doubt, but everything ive ever seen about him shows me he's grounded, has a good head on his shoulders, cares about his teammates and the success of the team and appears well liked by the people who know him.

He's Montreal's next captain in my mind.

Sidney Crosby disagrees with the bolded part.

Said it years ago, maybe not for the next captaincy, but Eller is my dark horse for captain at some point.

I think he'd make a great one as well. As I've said in this thread, we should go with three As to ease a new leadership group into their roles.

A-Eller
A-Plekanec
A-Prust/Gorges/PK

Then after a year see how things stand. Eller is getting to be pretty old now, I think if you give him an A next season he'll embrace the role and show himself to be the best candidate.

It should be a player that will be with this team long term, Gorges could be moved in a variety of situations over the next few years. It should be Subban, but he gets too much hate for that to happen. Eller doesn't get enough recognition as a prime candidate.
