I had to look, he is listed as a LW that shoots right on the site I checked. Not uncommon for Euro players to play their opposite wing.

11 goals in 23 games last season with CLB with only two coming on the PP.

30+ goal pace ..kinda get's your attention, I wonder why he had such a hard time finding a contract? With that said he had 14 career goals before he hit CBJ.

I don't think It's a pickup for the Marlies, I think they fully intend to sign him.

You look at his age, and his numbers with Columbus, they are VERY similar to the numbers that Bunting put up in Arizona the year before he went to Toronto.

Now I'm not saying he's going to come in here and put up 63 points like Bunting did because Bunting got to play with Matthews and Marner, and baring injury I think Knies is secure in that spot.

But I do wonder if a similar opportunity to the one that was given to Bunting will be presented to Alex.

Absolutely there is a big opportunity along the left side. To be fair he went on a silly hot streak in CBJ. Before CBJ in 93 GP he had 14G and 20A. In 28 games in CBJ he had 11G 4A. He's a super long shot to make the Leafs. If there is a spot on the Leafs it is along the left side. If you are smart and have a little offence to your game, come into the training camp and play absolute shut down work your ass off defence. We have lots of offence, not a lot of elite shut down defensive forwards. Show the coach you can be trusted and once you make the team pick your spots to show your offence. Playing one sided offence with no consideration to defence is going to put him on the quick train to the Marlies. Berube is a details coach, he needs to trust you.

They're up there.

It's harder though because he went from a bad Buffalo team to a bad Chicago team, bad environments.

I'd try him on a line with William in training camp, maybe he can give you Robertson production?

There is nothing to lose, start him with Willie, there has to be some sort of chemistry playing with a guy that you've probably scrimmaged with for 20 some years? A line of Willie, Alex and John will probably score as much as they get scored against.

I like the signing especially since its virtually no risk, but lets not get too excited over one 23 game stretch. Blake and Clarkson also had one good year each and look what happened to them. I'm not saying its impossible, and I hope it really works, but let's just not put him into HHOF just yet

I'd imagine the scouting report looks something like...Very skilled but questionable defensively and potentially inconsistent.

I've read concerns about his skating also.

He could also just be someone that is a late bloomer that took awhile to put it all together.

For all the flack Willy gets, He's always been said to be an extremely hard worker off the ice and maybe that will work well for Alex being around his brother all the time who's setting the tone off the ice.

Still most likely a longshot that he hits but the upside looks to be there.

No, and I know that because nobody has EVER missed the playoffs for 13 straight seasons that's an NHL record and I'd argue that record makes them the worst franchise in NHL history.

And I don't think that streak is ending for at least 3 more years because I think the current top 4 in the Atlantic will be the top 4 until at least 2027.

And even then assuming Ullmark stays in Ottawa I think Ottawa is closer to a playoff team than Buffalo is, Detroit too.

I’m interested to see if being around William keeps him super engaged and motivated, and if that translates into him taking some sort of next step. Otherwise, based on stats it hardly looks like he’s outgrown the AHL or doesn’t have anything left to prove down there.

Nobody is putting him in the HHOF, but he is a similar age to Bunting, and he did have a similar run, to the one Bunting had in Arizona before Bunting came here so there is that comparison.

Regardless Alex should probably be in the NHL.

Having players in the AHL that are good enough to be in the NHL is a good thing.

I see him as a safer version of galchenyuk without all the wild baggage, or maybe even a Bunting like player. Someone that the team may be able to drop into the lineup for an offensive boost

Yeah maybe it’s to keep him close until a roster player is moved off the leafs. Maybe Robbie for a similar struggling RHD prospect then sign Alex to an nhl contract

I think that's an oversimplification as to Nylander's situation in BUF.

Couldn't you say the same thing about: CBJ, PIT, and CHI?

He can't just be a victim of circumstance and bad management of 3 NHL teams, but will all of a sudden be awesome in TOR.

Good depth and intriguing to see if the Columbus output wasn’t a blip. See what he looks like at camp. Start him in the A then give a contract if there is an injury or trade.

How does a 8th overall bomb out like he did? Some guys just aren’t NHL players, but his path has been a stumble from the start after the CHL.

Played with a horrible Rochester AHL team at 18 (how that was allowed I don’t know thought you had to be 19) that wasn’t a good start. Seemed to pout a bit and be inconsistent with effort level while with Buffalo in the minors. Missed nearly a year with a knee injury and the Covid year. (2020) with Chicago.

Never really got a chance with Pittsburgh but was just average in the AHL. Finally getting close to a ppg player in the last AHL year with them

Had a good stint with Columbus with higher minutes.

Don’t know. We’ll see. Low risk at this point.

He played at 18 and then 19 in the AHL.

Perhaps should have stayed in junior?

Bunting was 20 his first year in AHL (DOB: September 17, 1995).
First year 2015.

• 21 games 10 goals 13 points

Nylander age 20 - AHL

• 31 points in 49 games.
• Age 25/26 - NHL - Columbus
• 23 games 11 goals 15 points

Nylander played 5 games with Penguins as a 25 year old.

I was thinking Willy may drill sergeant him if they are together like only brothers can.

I like the comparison. Although Gally had a way bigger track record and resume than Alex Nylander does.

I'd say there's a really low chance of him actually playing a Leafs gam this coming season. And that's fine, considering it's a no-risk move.

I'm thrilled with the move no matter what, because it's nice to have NHL experience in the NHL. And the family connection makes this an interesting storyline to follow.

Notice how pudgy and ruddy Alex is compared to Willy. Not only that but he appears to have gotten pudgier since being drafted. He reminds me a lot of Phil Kessel.

Except without all the talent.

I think it's pretty clear why one brother had success and the other did not despite being drafted in the exact same spot only two years apart. It has nothing to do with the teams they were on either. Alex Nylander could have played with Eichel who is arguably a much better centre than Tavares.

It's because Alex is just as lazy as his brother on the ice and appesrs to be even lazier off.

NHL is too easy for him, he needs a challenge.
He should work harder and go for back-to-back 50 goal seasons.

this is a great signing IMO. Alex should have every opportunity to thrive in our system. There is an NHL skillset there, he might just need someone on the inside to push him over the top. Who better than his brother Willy who by all accounts is one of the hardest working guys on our team.

the signing just made too much sense.

Have a good camp, and he could see that AHL deal upgraded in no time. If not, the opportunity will still be there throughout the season.

Could this be what’s happening in Toronto?

Earlier this week, Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander posted a story on his Instagram account and fans are still trying to crack the code.

In his post, William Nylander was bragging about his brother Alex, who was squatting in the video. The Leafs’ superstar was saying how his younger brother was a beast in the gym and he basically let the fanbase do the dirty work for him.

The post got fans wondering if William was looking to get Alex on his team. That’s because the younger Nylander remains a free agent at the moment, and while it is not unusual to see brothers training together in the offseason, this may be William’s attempt to get Toronto to sign his brother as it needs some help in the secondary scoring department.

Fans therefore raised the question, wondering if or when general manager Brad Treliving would sign Alex Nylander with reporter Josh Wegman for the Score commenting on how much he could get on the open market.
