Now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder if we have to bring Orlov back next year just to give Nikishin someone else on defense who speaks Russian and can help get him through practices on the fly

It's funny, the Borg is so much smarter than me. I've always been kind of resistant to the notion of the whole "sign a guy to a long-term deal then trade him immediately" (De Haan, Bunting, others...) because I've been concerned it'll ruin our ability to sign guys in the future.

But, what I'm coming to realize is that they're basically spinning gold out of yarn when they do. We go from nothing, to Shayne Gostisbehere for a year, to a 3rd round pick (assuming we offload him). Better than having nothing and then signing a guy to a one-year deal to be a stopgap. It's EA Be A GM BS, sign a guy then trade him for picks, repeat to get infinite picks.

All of that to say, I'm going to stop being resistant to trading Ghost or Walker (though if Walker keeps up the play he's showing this postseason he's a keeper). If we do have to re-sign Orlov, Ghost is probably gone. I wouldn't be opposed in a vacuum, it'd all depend on who the 1RD we bring in is and whether he's a capable PPQB1 (he better be).

I think that just highlights how well prepared our front office is for 90% of he scenarios out there. They have a long prioritized list of players that fit our scheme so if there is ever a need for us to pivot, we have already done thorough research into who we want to target to at the very least keep afloat.

The way they got out of the Rantanen mess was a masterclass in how to pivot when things aren't working.

The only thing that will surprise me about this upcoming summer is if we don't use all our cap space. How we use it seems to be very much in play right now with an endless amount of possibilities at our disposal.

It's possible that Orlov plays his off-hand in a Nikishin-Orlov pairing, the third pair becomes Ghost-Chatfield, and Morrow has to play his way into the lineup. Then you don't need to make any trades.

Rod's not wrong. The playoffs are a time when a single mistake could lead to the end of your season, so putting a guy that might struggle with communicating on the ice (and thus, would theoretically be more prone to committing mistakes), it's bad math.
I can easily see a scenario where we don't play Chatfield or Nikishin. Fans may riot, but these are big, big, big games, every single one of them.

It’s possible but that’d leave Slavin-Walker? And still no clear path for Morrow (though that I’m less concerned with).

I'm high on Morrow, personally, but unlike Nikishin, I think he needs to play his way in. If you give Orlov a high-dollar 1 year contract, it's possible that you can trade Orlov at the deadline if Morrow proves that he can hang in the NHL and if Nikishin is adjusting enough.

This deserves one of those memes where the round ball is all excited and happy about to reach for something and the bigger ball comes behind him and pulls him off of it.

Little ball is canes fans reaching for a Nikishin debut, Big ball is RBA.

But RBA has been solid and made great calls this playoffs. so. Let him do his thing. If we finish this tonight, less chance of wilson or whoever injuring someone for us if we go to the ECF. I do expect to lose tonight, but I have hope as well.

Still think you take this chance to rest chatty and get Nikishin in. You do not want chatfield out coming home 3-2 and facing a possible loss and game 7
This is what we lose sight of in this situation. Rod and every other single coach on the planet would not change their lineup to get someone in at this point. You can never not take a single elimination chance seriously. It’s good Nikishin has been with the team enough so Rod is seeing what the guy can do and climb to the top of the reserve list. Even with that though, I’ll still need to see it happen before I believe Rod is going to skip a pre existing pecking order to use the guy. If he’s said he’s going to use Nikishin first then I’m 60/40 to believing him. I’m taking someone’s word for it that he said he would do it, I didn’t see the quote myself.

I still presume it’s only in case of injury imo the guy gets in, or we’re down big in a series. My mind says 0-3 but if we’re 0-2 and they’ve been obvious losses then maybe that’s the moment. I’d be really surprised if there was a lineup change going into a potential next round without someone being impressively gimped.

If Rod's worried about mistakes in a big game, choosing not to play Nikishin and then putting in Morrow is...a choice.

Rod's not putting in Morrow (or Stillman) in if Chatfield can't go. It will be Nikishin, even if he's never been on NA ice he's the best option. And Rod's not going down to 5D either. Better to play 6D in game 5 and have them fresher for game 6.

This is the truth, not matter how frustrating it is to some people. If Chatty goes down it’s a little hard to see our first replacement choice being one that causes a righty/lefty issue.

This hints also at the way maybe Nikishin gets in. Playing 7 D. Rod has done it.

Agreed, but I think Morrow needs to settle in a bit before Rod trusts him on the first line. But that does seem to be a logical early season promotion if he shows capable.
I think they'll get pre-season reps for sure just to see if there's something there so that Rod knows if it's a viable fallback option if someone gets hurt. Don't think we're going to carry Morrow on the roster as the #7 full-time next year simply because he doesn't have to clear waivers and it's FAR better he get playing time as the #1 in Chicago than sit in the press box. But he'll be the priority call-up over whoever the roster #7 is.

Yeah good point. If we do choose to bring Orlov back, and I am trending in that direction hearing how the language barrier is the biggest issue for Nikishin right now, then there isn't room for Morrow unless we trade Ghost (and I'm not sure we want to do that), then it means that Morrow would be better off being the primary defensive callup next year continuing to get PT in Chicago until we need him.
