News & Notes XLV: Simply Having A Wonderful Canesmastime

The hate for Claude Lemieux burned brighter than the hate for Matt Cooke, though. It was the same level of cheapshotting dangerous crap, plus the same player being a key playoff performer for several Stanley Cup teams. I mean imagine if Cooke had a Justin Williams like playoff career, so his cheap shots were mixed in with elimination goals and winning the Smythe.

Lemieux's great sin was breaking Draper's face. Otherwise, he's French Canadian Sean Avery. It's fun to hate on a character like that.

To me, Cooke being largely responsible for ending Savard's career is much darker. He was so odious that Don Cherry of all people ended up a protogonist for old school and new school fans alike for a time.

I think you’re understating how dirty of a player Claude was. That one hit gets a lot of attention because of the drama that it sparked, but he was the kind of guy who was just continuously finding ways to cut a guy or give him a stick in the teeth. He bit a guy once.

Avery was just a yapper, like a Barnaby without the guts or the fighting ability.

Don’t get me wrong, Cooke was probably the dirtiest of the group. Saying Lemieux was at the “same level” of dirt was an overstatement. It’s more that Lemieux was also really dirty, and also really an agitator in a way Cooke never was, and also just good enough to hurt your team on the scoreboard at the worst possible moments. In terms of generating pure visceral hatred, the kind that makes grown men emotionally upset while watching a game on TV, it’s hard to think of anyone who exceeded that.

Trying to assemble a 21st century full roster of the hated (ignoring forward positions):

Cooke - Rempe - Wilson
Lucic - Torres - Avery
Marchand - Bertuzzi - Tucker
Tibbets - T. Gillies - Simon

Kronwall - Trouba
McSorely - Voynov
Pronger - DeAngelo

Binnington
Luongo - About the fanbase at the time, not the player himself

wasn't T Gillies the Islander that went bat-shit crazy in the crazy fight fest Pen game?

What about Orpik? Or was that a Canes thing

Claude wasn’t an obvious yapper, though im sure he was involved that way. He was more about actually doing dirty shit as often as he could vs telling you what he was going to do. Constant sticks to the backs of legs, or his leg to the back of legs. Little spears. Shoving you down when you were at a disadvantage. Sticks at your goalie. If he had a chance to blast you, he’d maximum effort truck you with a hit that was clean back then - because he could throw monster hits and he was really strong for his size, very low center of gravity.

Lucic-Torres-Avery is unhinged

He was also, arguably, the cause of Ward’s downfall. I believe it was Game 1 of the 09 series that he “accidentally” crashed into Ward and caused the back injury that plagued him for the rest of his career.
To be fair to Cooke, Ward’s back had been weakened significantly from carrying that team on his back for 3 months.

It's funny seeing TDA on there when it's mostly just hatred of the man himself based on Twitter's echo-chamber, or because he's horrendous defensively, but otherwise nobody really cares. Scott Stevens should probably make the list as he was another "bend but don't break the rules" type where 9/10 of his hits would be an ejection these days but were "legal" back then.

Could easily add Georgiev to the goalie list as everybody seems to hate that dude (players and fans alike). Hextall perhaps too? (Didn't see 21st century)

Corey Perry should be a healthy scratch at least

Missing Dale Hunter...he used to ride other player's head into the board stantions.
Hextall,Billy Smith, Scott Stevens and Ulf would like a word as to why they aren't on this team as well.

2000 onwards. Stevens is an oversight. He was a menace in the early years of millennium. Shortened at least the primes of several careers.
