News & Notes XLV: Simply Having A Wonderful Canesmastime

Expecting a normal response to this

Definitely a shot at Eddie Olczyk. Phil Simms used to be the same way with the Baltimore Ravens in the 00s, would always complain about them being "dirty" when they weren't doing anything different than any other team. Olczyk is just a bitter douchebag.

I find it funny that the Hurricanes are the softest team but also the dirtiest team at the same time. Seems like the "old guard" doesn't like when non-traditional teams push back.

Hey, remember when he was with this organization...this year?

Wild that he terminates his contract, goes overseas and still only plays in 18 games over there
Pepe wanted Europe for this:

Who do you think is the record holder for being hated by the most fan bases? Claude has to be high up on the list. He’s got the leg up because the Whalers and Nordiques hated his f***ing guts too.

If it’s not Claude then I can’t imagine who. He even split his nonsense evenly between the conferences.

Matt Cooke. Savard headshot (Boston). Karlsson skate cut (Ottawa). McDonagh headshot that drew the big suspension (New York). All of that while playing for a widely disliked team for various reasons, himself included lol.

Trip down memory lane:

He also took out Scott Walker with a headshot in….09? Didn’t watch the entire video there so not sure if that was included

Yes. At ~:45. There’s a Cole knee on knee in that lowlight reel as well.

Not that Cooke wasn’t a dirty player previously, as the video provided evidence of, but it’s interesting that he became such a menace in that era. Similar story with Trouba; he didn’t play near the border until he became a Ranger. It makes you wonder what players are told behind closed doors.

The hate for Claude Lemieux burned brighter than the hate for Matt Cooke, though. It was the same level of cheapshotting dangerous crap, plus the same player being a key playoff performer for several Stanley Cup teams. I mean imagine if Cooke had a Justin Williams like playoff career, so his cheap shots were mixed in with elimination goals and winning the Smythe.

He was also, arguably, the cause of Ward’s downfall. I believe it was Game 1 of the 09 series that he “accidentally” crashed into Ward and caused the back injury that plagued him for the rest of his career.

I am so upset that we don't get to see the truly dumb plays that led to that.

OTOH, the face because he didn't realize the other person had 3 in a row with both ends open? Magnificent.

In total seriousness, this sort of thing should be part of draft interviews.

If you knew that this was the sort of guy who focuses so much on placing his chips that he is completely unaware of what the other guy is doing, and/or lacks the spatial sense to understand the pattern that is emerging, would you draft him 31st overall? I mean you can actually see his hockey career play out in 30 seconds of Connect Four.
